The city had sued in Verizon in 2017, per The New York Post, accusing the company of reneging on an agreement reached in 2008, under Mayor Michael Bloomberg, to make Fios available as an option to everyone in New York City. That followed an audit by the city which showed that many areas of the city were not wired for Fios service. https://nationalinterest.org/blog/techland/verizon-settles-fios-lawsuit-new-york-173598 ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20201202172500.410A24E8@telecom2018.csail.mit.edu> Date: Wed, 2 Dec 2020 17:25:00 +0000 (UTC) From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Verizon pitches 50 'small cell' sites to Morristown council By Kevin Coughlin Verizon Wireless is asking town officials to authorize 50 "small cell nodes," for blanket coverage by the company's 4G and 5G networks. Some nodes would be appended atop existing utility poles and street lights. Others would require new poles. Transmission gear could be concealed within "stealth" poles. https://morristowngreen.com/2020/12/02/verizon-pitches-50-small-cell-sites-to-morristown-council/ ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20201202172757.1AF154E8@telecom2018.csail.mit.edu> Date: Wed, 2 Dec 2020 17:27:57 +0000 (UTC) From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: AT&T's 5G strategy is a little like Verizon, a little like T-Mobile by Linda Hardesty While AT&T was one of the early proponents of mmWave spectrum for 5G, the company has been rather quiet about its 5G spectrum strategy this year. Speaking at a FierceWireless 5G virtual event this week, Gordon Mansfield, AT&T's VP of Mobility & Access Architecture, sounded a little like a cross between the executives at T-Mobile and the leaders at Verizon in terms of 5G spectrum. https://www.fiercewireless.com/5g/at-t-s-5g-strategy-a-little-like-verizon-a-little-like-t-mobile ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20201202175001.2D78C4E8@telecom2018.csail.mit.edu> Date: Wed, 2 Dec 2020 17:50:01 +0000 (UTC) From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: LUMEN / CenturyLink: don't exclude union workers from the MLK holiday! Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for workers' rights and unions as part of the struggle for civil rights. MLK famously declared, "The labor movement was the principal force that transformed misery and despair into hope and progress." Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis while supporting sanitation workers in their union efforts. Recently, a LUMEN / CenturyLink email informed all staff that as of 2021, MLK Day would be a US company paid holiday for the first time in the company's history. Yet, union workers were not given the new paid holiday, even after members asked for it. Union workers were told they could bring up the holiday at their next contract expiration, as far away as 2023. https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/centurylink-mlk-holiday?source=direct_link ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20201203161348.B76D0565@telecom2018.csail.mit.edu> Date: Thu, 3 Dec 2020 16:13:48 +0000 (UTC) From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: WI: Editorial: Time to move dispatch to FDL County Should the emergency-services dispatch center remain in Ripon, or move to Fond du Lac County? The Ripon Common Council has wrestled with this question over the past almost five months because Ripon's outdated system will require costly upgrades in the near future. https://www.riponpress.com/editorial/editorials/editorial-time-to-move-dispatch-to-fdl-county/article_3e3ec1da-34ca-11eb-a9a1-0335b8aa1db3.html ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20201203224200.2B2D6565@telecom2018.csail.mit.edu> Date: Thu, 3 Dec 2020 22:42:00 +0000 (UTC) From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Verizon's Malady: Despite Covid, fiber build is slightly ahead of schedule by Mike Robuck Verizon has bold ambitions to have its 5G Ultra Wideband enabled in 60 cities by the end of this year, but to do that it needs more fiber in those urban areas. During Tuesday's Wells Fargo TMT Summit 2020, Verizon CTO Kyle Malady said the telco was aggressively adding fiber in those urban areas through its One Fiber program. Through One Fiber, Verizon is adding 5G nodes on its fiber across the 60 cities where its deploying the 5G Ultra Wideband service. https://www.fiercetelecom.com/telecom/verizon-s-malady-despite-covid-fiber-build-slightly-ahead-schedule ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20201203224929.26C87565@telecom2018.csail.mit.edu> Date: Thu, 3 Dec 2020 22:49:29 +0000 (UTC) From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Verizon has been leaking customers' personal information for days (at least) A bug in a customer chat feature shows transcripts of other people's chats. By Dan Goodin Verizon is struggling to fix a glitch that has been leaking customers' addresses, phone numbers, account numbers, and other personal information through a chat system that helps prospective subscribers figure out if Fios services are available in their location. The personal details appear when people click on a link to chat with a Verizon representative. When the chat window opens, it contains transcripts of conversations that other customers, either prospective or current, have had. The transcripts include full names, addresses, phone numbers, account numbers (in the event they already have an account), and various other information. Some of the transcripts viewed by Ars date back to June. A separate Window included customers' addresses, although it wasn't clear who those addresses belonged to. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/12/verizon-has-been-leaking-customers-personal-information-for-days-at-least/ ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Fri, 04 Dec 2020
