By Lazaro Aleman Not surprisingly, only one company responded to Jefferson County's solicitation of bids for the planning, design - and ultimately the construction - of the infrastructure to provide Internet broadband service to designated neighborhoods outside Monticello. http://www.ecbpublishing.com/will-centurylink-be-our-broadband-provider/ -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <86eelczyoi.fsf@telecom2018.csail.mit.edu> Date: 1 Nov 2020 19:04:13 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: CenturyLink's Bid for Fast Appeal in Investor Class Suit Fails CenturyLink Inc. lost its bid to have the Eighth Circuit immediately weigh a lower court decision certifying a class of investors in a suit accusing the company of misleading them about overbilling practices. https://news.bloomberglaw.com/us-law-week/centurylinks-bid-for-fast-appeal-in-investor-class-suit-fails -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <86imaozz8d.fsf@telecom2018.csail.mit.edu> Date: 1 Nov 2020 18:52:18 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: What's messing up my internet connection for Zoom meetings and other work? By Patrick Marshall Special to The Seattle Times Q: I have a refurbished HP laptop with Windows 10. We use CenturyLink for the DSL connection to the modem. We recently purchased a new modem from CenturyLink for better security. Now, though, particularly when we're using Zoom, a message pops up that says our internet connection is unstable, and often we lose our connection to the modem and the internet. There's often a problem getting connected when we turn on the computer. It takes restarting the computer a couple of times before it connects. It occasionally happens as well on my desktop, which also has a Wi-Fi connection. My question is whether the connection problems are due to a problem with the modem, the line from CenturyLink or the Wi-Fi card in the computer. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -- Henry Burton https://www.seattletimes.com/business/technology/whats-messing-up-my-internet-connection-for-zoom-meetings-and-other-work/ -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <86a6w0zy6o.fsf@telecom2018.csail.mit.edu> Date: 1 Nov 2020 19:14:55 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: The Justice Department Finally--Finally!--Takes on Google and the Danger of Monopolies By Cory Doctorow At its inception, the digital rights movement was mocked for its foolish obsession with the sideshow of online trivialities, the delusion that the rules governing a bunch of Star Trek message boards had some connection with the urgent, innately physical world of human rights. Fast-forward 30 years and the same people are being mocked as Pollyannas who only saw tech as a force for good and failed to warn us of the risk of impending technological dystopia. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/justice-department-finally-finally-takes-101047326.html -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Mon, 02 Nov 2020
