Experts weigh in as residents see higher internet bills By Jamie Warren Cox and CenturyLink gave families unlimited internet data during part of the pandemic, but that offer ended right before many Arizona kids started online school, leaving some families with higher internet bills. https://tinyurl.com/y4yfkb9k -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200827175739.GA17848@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Thu, 27 Aug 2020 17:57:39 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Expansion of rural broadband is vital for businesses and students, advocates say By PAUL HAMMEL Lincoln - When the coronavirus struck, Sidney-based Wheat Belt Public Power District implemented its plan to cope with a pandemic. Thanks to the ubiquity and ease of use of cell phones, episodes of police brutality captured on video have allowed communities to begin to address policing problems. And where would our economy be right now without Zoom? https://tinyurl.com/y57whxvk -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <CAH8yC8ngRLBYPX-0ALwJtOHfkVHXewoGvprQ0VM28=tVaPp0iQ@mail.gmail.com> Date: 27 Aug 2020 00:44:36 -0400 From: "Jeffrey Walton" <noloader@gmail.com> Subject: 5G in US averages 51Mbps while other countries hit hundreds of megabits Average 5G download speeds in the US are 50.9Mbps, a nice step up from average 4G speeds but far behind several countries where 5G speeds are in the 200Mbps to 400Mbps range. These statistics were reported today by OpenSignal, which presented average 5G speeds in 12 countries based on user-initiated speed tests conducted between May 16 and August 14. The US came in last of the 12 countries in 5G speeds, with 10 of the 11 other countries posting 5G speeds that at least doubled those of the US. The US's average 5G speed is 1.8 times higher than the country's average 4G download speed of 28.9Mbps. User tests in neighboring Canada produced a 4G average of 59.4Mbps and a 5G average of 178.1Mbps. Taiwan and Australia both produced 5G averages above 200Mbps, while South Korea and Saudi Arabia produced the highest 5G speeds at 312.7Mbps and 414.2Mbps, respectively. https://tinyurl.com/y3ma8sre ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Fri, 28 Aug 2020
