In a statement to Gizmodo, a Verizon spokesperson said the new plan is primarily for rural customers in those areas where there is "excess network capacity." Authorities said 911 services and some landline services are down in the Yancey and Mitchell areas as Frontier Communications engineers perform network upgrades. According to a news release, the work is scheduled for midnight to 6 a.m. on Aug. 4, 5 and 6 and will result in limited phone dialing and an interruption of internet service lasting approximately two hours for Frontier customers in Mars Hill on Aug. 4, Weaverville on Aug. 5 and Burnsville on Aug. 6. All work is expected to be complete and services restored by 6 a.m. on those dates.
