The next federal COVID relief package, the HEROES Act, was passed in the US House of Representatives in May, but is now stuck in the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has stalled the bill because he opposes core provisions that would extend unemployment protections and aid for state and local governments, which is desperately needed by many workers who have been laid off or furloughed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead he wants to focus on protecting employers from being sued for putting workers and customers at risk. https://tinyurl.com/y65hnbd5 -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <538d9320-db30-3fcf-68d3-836388298c49@gmail.com> Date: Mon, 3 Aug 2020 13:38:37 -0400 From: Bill Horne <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Teachers, Students, Parents Demand Comcast and Verizon Help Close the Digital Divide by Tiffany Watson BALTIMORE, MD - As a part of the August 3rd National Day of Resis- tance, Baltimore City, Prince George's County, Montgomery County, and Philadelphia teachers unions are demanding Comcast improve the quality of their service and offer it for free to students and educators. https://foxbaltimore.com/news/local/teachers-students-parents-demand-comcast-and-verizon-help-close-the-digital-divide ------------------------------ Message-ID: <5d40efb1-a3e9-ac95-93e7-ac1fc5b4b11c@gmail.com> Date: Mon, 3 Aug 2020 13:35:20 -0400 From: Bill Horne <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Bridging the digital divide: Owasso Public Schools to receive 300 Verizon mobile internet devices State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister on Friday announced that 175 Oklahoma school districts, including Owasso, have been awarded mobile internet access and devices through 50,000 Verizon Unlimited 4GE data plans and Jetpacks, following a competitive grant process. https://tinyurl.com/y272vjf4 ------------------------------ Message-ID: <aa2c6544-b255-2239-ed1c-fddd56ceb176@gmail.com> Date: Mon, 3 Aug 2020 13:26:29 -0400 From: Bill Horne <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Floridians continue pulling plug on traditional phones byGary Detman TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (News Service of Florida) - Cell phones are seem- ingly never out of reach. Meanwhile, people rely more and more on internet technology. And the result is the same each year: Florida residents and businesses continue to ditch traditional wireline phone service as they look to other ways to make calls. https://cbs12.com/news/local/floridians-continue-pulling-plug-on-traditional-phones ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Tue, 04 Aug 2020
