State Department officials met in December with AT&T executives to discuss how they can work together to disarm Maduro's propaganda machine. Maduro's opponents want AT&T's DirecTV unit to restore a number of channels it was required to take down from its lineup. International channels including CNN en Espanol fill an important void for information inside Venezuela after a number of broadcasters critical of the government disappeared from the airwaves. But forcing AT&T to do the political bidding of Maduro's foes could lead to retaliation. https://www.wnky.com/i/ap-exclusive-att-under-pressure-to-defy-maduros-censors/ -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200117172101.GA27770@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Fri, 17 Jan 2020 17:21:01 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: President Signs Sweeping New Robocall Legislation By Scott Dailard, J.G. The law generally restricts the use of autodialers, but in 2015 Congress created an exception for robocalls to collect debts guaranteed by the federal government. Several groups have since challenged the law on First Amendment grounds, arguing that the TCPA discriminates against particular speakers. The Court will now consider the issue in Barr v. American Association of Political Consultants. http://epic.org/2020/01/supreme-court-to-review-consti.html ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Sun, 19 Jan 2020
