The layoffs will affect a "small" portion of the workforce and are consistent with staffing changes AT&T has done in the past, spokesman Jim Greer told Reuters by telephone. He declined to specify how many positions would be cut. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-at-t-layoffs/att-to-cut-jobs-in-weaker-business-units-idUSKCN1PM2OB?feedType=3DRSS&feedName=3DtechnologyNews -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <9B7CF428-2566-4A04-82B8-00ED381E0105@roscom.com> Date: 27 Jan 2019 23:35:08 -0500 From: "Monty Solomon" <monty@roscom.com> Subject: Surveillance capitalism has gone rogue. We must curb its excesses. "Surveillance capitalism" has gone rogue. We must curb its excesses. Competition among surveillance capitalists has produced startling innovations that challenge the foundations of a democratic society. A decade ago, privacy scholars Chris Hoofnagle and Jennifer King found that people's interest in protecting their privacy increased in proportion to their understanding of how companies acquire and use their personal data. As long as people were kept in the dark, companies could count on little resistance. That helps to explain how the plundering of personal data has exploded during the past 20 years. Tech companies learned how to turn your life into data without asking. That our ignorance is their bliss is among the unique signatures of a new economic logic that I call surveillance capitalism. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/surveillance-capitalism-has-gone-rogue-we-must-curb-its-excesses/2019/01/24/be463f48-1ffa-11e9-9145-3f74070bbdb9_story.html ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20190128054923.GA12822@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2019 00:49:23 -0500 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Bogus AT&T rep tried to scam Pennsylvania resident By Mary Ann Thomas Allegheny Township Police are warning residents of unsolicited phone calls from someone falsely claiming residents are eligible for a phone service upgrade.
