The outage may prevent residents in those areas from dialing 911 from their landline telephones. https://kval.com/news/local/phone-service-outage-impacts-911-service-in-douglas-county -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20190819184204.GA7278@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Mon, 19 Aug 2019 18:42:04 +0000 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: I installed Verizon's free junk call blocker and it seems to kind of help There is a way to reduce call spam. It's not perfect, but it helps. And hey, that's a start, right? By David Gewirtz This is something of an "on one hand, on the other hand" story. I'm going to start by heaping faint praise on Verizon, but I'll end by scolding them. Are you surprised? Of course not. We all get spam calls, scam calls, and robocalls. According to the US Federal Trade Commission Report on Robocalls CG Docket No. 17-59, nearly half of all calls made to cell phones in 2019 will be robocalls. Additionally, there are human-driven spam and scam calls that will add to that call volume. https://www.zdnet.com/article/i-installed-verizons-free-junk-call-blocker-and-it-seems-to-kind-of-help/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20190819183844.GA7201@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Mon, 19 Aug 2019 18:38:44 +0000 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Texas: 'Sim Jacking' scam affecting Verizon customers DENISON, Tex. (KXII) It's called 'Sim Jacking' or 'Sim Swapping' and it's another way thieves are trying to steal your information. It looks like you're receiving a call from your phone's carrier, except once you answer, you may not be able to open your phone again - meaning it could shut off completely. https://www.kxii.com/content/news/Phone-Sim--548307641.html -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20190819204722.GA7824@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Mon, 19 Aug 2019 20:47:23 +0000 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: NC: Petition created in protest of Verizon tower By Junious Smith III As conversations for a potential Verizon tower in Kinston continue, hundreds have signed a petition asking for it not to come to downtown. On July 15, representatives from the phone giant spoke to Kinston City Council about a 180-foot tower, which would be planted in the rear portion of 104 W. Peyton Avenue in downtown Kinston. A second presentation is slated for Sept. 16 with Verizon providing additional details. https://www.neusenews.com/index/2019/8/19/petition-created-in-protest-of-verizon-tower -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20190819182715.GA7130@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Mon, 19 Aug 2019 18:27:15 +0000 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Arkansas: 911 system is back up and running after outage By Chloe Hill UPDATE: 8/17/2019 Officials tell us the 911 system has been fully restored. ORIGINAL STORY: The 911 system for Johnson, Pope, Logan and Franklin counties went down Thursday. However, calls to 911 are still going through.
