Professor Carl Shapiro from the University of California at Berkeley will testify that AT&T's acquisition of Time Warner would raise costs for pay-TV consumers across the country by hundreds of millions of dollars a year. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-10/u-s-poised-to-wrap-at-t-merger-case-as-economist-set-to-testify -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20180411140544.GA4170@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2018 10:05:44 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Healthcare Industry Rife with Error and Misuse, Verizon Data Breach Report Finds Healthcare is the only industry in which there were more internal actors behind cyber incidents than external in the last year, according to Verizon's 2018 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR). The report, which covered various industries beyond healthcare, such as education, financial and insurance, information, and the public sector, revealed a core finding that ransomware attacks are a key cybersecurity threat for global organizations. In fact, ransomware is the most common type of malware, found in 39 percent of malware- related data breaches - double that of last year's DBIR - and accounts for over 700 incidents. What's more, Verizon's analysis found that attacks are now moving into business critical systems, which encrypt file servers or databases, inflicting more damage and commanding bigger ransom requests. https://www.healthcare-informatics.com/news-item/cybersecurity/healthcare-industry-rife-error-and-misuse-verizon-breach-report-finds -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20180411150801.GA4492@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2018 11:08:01 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Expiring AT&T Union Contract Threatens Strike of 14,000 by James Anderson The Communications Workers of America (CWA) has authorized a potential strike against the telecommunications giant for employees in the Midwest - Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois. Technology workers across the country belonging to the CWA's "Legacy T" bargaining group might also strike. The contract for both groups will expire on Saturday. Lisa Bolton, vice president of telecommunications and technologies for CWA, said on Tuesday that Legacy T union members are willing to take this drastic step in order to get a better contract. She criticized the outsourcing of jobs, which has been a common gripe for the union. The CWA filed a lawsuit earlier this year accusing of AT&T subcontracting the jobs of laid-off employees. https://www.channelpartnersonline.com/2018/04/10/expiring-att-union-contract-threatens-strike-of-14000/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20180411154132.GA4685@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2018 11:41:32 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Oregon enacts net neutrality law as Pacific Northwest Trump resistance grows By Monica Nickelsburg Government agencies in Oregon will be prohibited from contracting with internet providers that don't uphold net neutrality principles under a new law signed by Gov. Kate Brown Tuesday. The rules take effect January 2019. Oregon is the second state in the nation, after Washington, to pass a net neutrality law. Both states are defying a December vote by the Federal Communications Commission to repeal net neutrality, a nickname for regulations that require internet providers to treat all lawful traffic the same. Up until the FCC's repeal, companies like Comcast and Verizon were not allowed to slow down some content or create paid fast lanes for services that rely on the internet. https://www.geekwire.com/2018/oregon-enacts-net-neutrality-law-pacific-northwest-trump-resistance-grows/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Thu, 12 Apr 2018
