AT&T announced plans to launch mobile 5G by the end of 2018. However, the company's release left out specifics including what markets will be included in the launch and what devices will be compatible with the new capabilities. The latter is a particularly pertinent question as most major chipset vendors - including Qualcomm and Intel - said they expect commercial 5G chipsets to become available in 2019. https://www.mobileworldlive.com/featured-content/top-three/rivals-seize-on-questions-around-att-5g-plan/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20180105173959.GA1507@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2018 12:39:59 -0500 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Wall Street firm slashes expectations on carriers' Q4 customer growth by Mike Dano The combination of "rational" competition and shortages in the supply of Apples new iPhone X will conspire to significantly reduce the expected growth in wireless customer additions in the fourth quarter, according to a new report from Wall Street investment firm Jefferies. Specifically, the firm said it lowered its estimates for wireless carriers' customer net additions by an overall 23% for the fourth quarter. That breaks down to: * Verizon: 685,000 postpaid customer additions in Q4, down from a previous estimate of 808,000. * AT&T: 445,000 postpaid customer additions in Q4, down from a previous estimate of 568,000. * T-Mobile: 1,060,000 postpaid customer additions in Q4, down from a previous estimate of 1,115,000. * Sprint: 200,000 postpaid customer additions in Q4, down from a previous estimate of 365,000. https://www.fiercewireless.com/wireless/wall-street-firm-slashes-expectations-carriers-q4-customer-growth -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20180105172930.GA1444@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2018 12:29:30 -0500 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Editorial: Warwick shouldn't have to take Verizon to court over its unreliable service It's wrong that Warwick has to resort to paying lawyers to ensure it gets reliable basic phone service for its 800 residents. The town's small size is probably the very reason its Selectboard this week had to resort to legal action to correct a problem that scrambled phone connections over the Christmas holiday. For four days over that long weekend, just when residents were trying to call or receive calls from family and friends, many lost service, and others literally had their wires crossed, getting calls aimed at other residents. http://www.recorder.com/warwick-phone-service-14662752 -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Sat, 06 Jan 2018
