They say it's anonymous, but the data shows how personal it is. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/12/10/business/location-data-privacy-apps.html ------------------------------ Message-ID: <95DA050A-3968-41C9-BA3C-2E4B4E257F68@roscom.com> Date: 10 Dec 2018 10:25:16 -0500 From: "Monty Solomon" <monty@roscom.com> Subject: How The Times Analyzed Location Tracking Companies How The Times Analyzed Location Tracking Companies Reporters tested apps made for both Android and iOS, evaluated app code and examined the companies receiving the data. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/10/technology/location-tracking-apps-privacy.html ***** Moderator's Note ***** Most of the apps mentioned in this post have an obvious need for location data, e.g. GasBuddy. This story is really about vague disclosures that don't reveal all the ways this data will be used. Of course, this will get /really/ interesting when someone publishes a list of companies that sell location-tracing apps to spouses and employers. Here's how to limit the snooping. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/10/technology/prevent-location-data-sharing.html ***** Moderator's Note ***** AFAIK, turning a phone off prevents location tracking. I don't know if there are any cellphones/apps/operating systems that can gather and store such information while the phone is "off," so please tell me if there are. A cryptocurrency investor who says he lost $24 million after his phone number was stolen in two hacks wants AT&T to pay him more than $200 million in damages. Michael Terpin, founder of Transform Group and BitAngels, filed a lawsuit against AT&T on Tuesday. Terpin argues that AT&T didn't do enough to protect his phone number despite the fact that the company was fully aware of the fact that criminals are increasingly targeting cryptocurrency investors by stealing their phone numbers in a fraud commonly known as SIM swapping, SIM hijacking, or "port out scam." https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/pawwkz/bitcoin-investor-sues-att-23-million-sim-swap-hack -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Tue, 11 Dec 2018
