Verizon has focused early trials on "fixed" 5G - providing high-speed internet services to homes that would compete with the broadband services of cable firms such as Comcast (CMCSA). Verizon's fixed 5G services would use high-frequency spectrum. The first commercial deployments, possibly for apartment buildings, are expected in 2018. http://www.investors.com/news/technology/verizon-china-could-battle-over-5g-mobile-standard/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20171024012629.GA5221@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2017 21:26:29 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: I went to buy a Pixel 2. Verizon tried to sell me a Galaxy S8 Commentary: Verizon is Google's exclusive partner for the Pixel 2 phone. But I wouldn't have known that after a chat with a Verizon salesman. You might watch a launch event and decide you must have that new phone. You might read a review -- they're very good on CNET, you know -- and hope you'll be influenced. Many people, though, walk into stores and are willing to be swayed. I'm one of them. I want to touch the phone, play with it and listen to a salesperson's patter. https://www.cnet.com/news/i-went-to-buy-a-pixel-2-and-verizon-tried-to-sell-me-a-galaxy-s8/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20171024010648.GA5033@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2017 21:06:48 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Competition, and Debt, Could Spell Trouble for Verizon By Jennifer Saba Verizon's perch as the No. 1 carrier in the United States looks secure. The $200 billion telecom firm reported a rise in wireless subscribers on Thursday. But the gap is narrowing. Cable rivals Comcast and Charter are also offering mobile services, AT&T is trying to become a media company, and Sprint and T-Mobile may yet merge. A heavy debt load could hobble Verizon's ability to quickly change lanes. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/19/business/dealbook/competition-and-debt-could-spell-trouble-for-verizon.html -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20171024013649.GA5417@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2017 21:36:49 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Hispanic group warns Verizon of possible protest over Univision blackout by Mike Snider The National Hispanic Media Coalition is threatening to rally Latino leaders against Verizon for its removal of Univision from the Verizon Fios service earlier this week. Verizon's blackout comes as the country recovers from Hurricane Katia and a pair of earthquakes, all of which hit in September. In a letter to Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam dated Wednesday, the group's president and CEO Alex Nogales said the NHMC "is outraged that at a time when catastrophic events have occurred in Mexico and Puerto Rico, Verizon has chosen to blackout Univision, the primary source of news for millions of Spanish-speaking and bilingual Latinos residing in the United States." https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2017/10/19/hispanic-group-warns-verizon-possible-protest-over-univision-blackout/782140001/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Tue, 24 Oct 2017
