Illinois is among states around the country trying to set rules for the suitcase-sized cell-site simulators, also known as Stingrays, which have the capability to capture data for hundreds or thousands of cellphones in a particular neighborhood - not just the cellphone police are after. http://www.bcdemocrat.com/2016/05/08/il-closer-look-cellphone-privacy/ _____________________________________________________ Knowledge may be power, but communications is the key dannyb@panix.com [to foil spammers, my address has been double rot-13 encoded] ------------------------------ Message-ID: <Pine.NEB.4.64.1605091051250.14052@panix5.panix.com> Date: Mon, 9 May 2016 10:52:37 -0400 From: danny burstein <dannyb@panix.com> Subject: India Mandates All Cell Phones Have "Panic Button" for Women [press writeup from makers.com, a women's issues group] India Mandates All Cell Phones Have "Panic Button" for Women The occurrence of rape in India is pervasive. The country averages one rape every four hours, according to a recent report. And to make matters worse, the nation has one of the lowest police-to-citizen ratios in the world. Now government officials are taking unique measures to combat the crisis by mandating that all mobile phone manufacturers, including the world's largest two - Apple and Samsung - feature a "panic button" for women. http://www.makers.com/blog/india-panic-button-mobile-women _____________________________________________________ Knowledge may be power, but communications is the key dannyb@panix.com [to foil spammers, my address has been double rot-13 encoded] ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20160511033840.GA22398@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Tue, 10 May 2016 23:38:40 -0400 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Verizon striker run down as New York cops protect scabs By Sandy English On Monday afternoon, a van carrying strikebreakers hit a Verizon worker picketing in front of City View Inn on Greenpoint Ave. in Long Island City, a neighborhood in New York City's borough of Queens. Emergency Medical Technicians arrived at the scene and took the striker to a hospital. As of this writing, the worker's condition is unknown. According to comments posted by strikers on social media, the van was driven by a uniformed member of the New York Police Department (NYPD). Strikers were taking part in a protest organized by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) at hotels where strikebreakers are quartered, when police opened up a path for the van as it sped through the police barricade and struck a parked car with a striker inside. https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2016/05/10/vzsc-m10.html -- Bill Horne ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Wed, 11 May 2016
