They would have 30 days to switch to something else. Customers are upset. They don't want to lose the reliability of telephone service that works during extended power failures, and to pay more for less service. Verizon, one of the nation's largest phone providers, has begun without a formal announcement to stop operating legacy copper and modern fiber lines on the same telephone poles.
