A central lesson of science is that to understand complex issues (or even simple ones), we must try to free our minds of dogma and to guarantee the freedom to publish, to contradict, and to experiment. Arguments from authority are unacceptable.

Subject: Centurylink Considers Selling Data Centers Message-ID: <n1o568$gte$1@dont-email.me> by Gina Narcisi CenturyLink might be taking a page out of Windstream's book as the telecommunications giant seeks alternatives for its data center operations and co-location business. Telecommunications provider WindStream agreed to sell its data center services business, including more than 20 data centers, to cloud services and co-location provider TierPoint last month for $575 million. According to CenturyLink, there are several strategic alternatives on the table, including partnerships or a joint venture, a sale of all or a portion of the data centers, or potentially keeping the data center assets as part of CenturyLink's portfolio, said Glen Post, president and CEO of CenturyLink, during the provider's third-quarter 2015 earnings call this week. http://www.crn.com/news/data-center/300078744/centurylink-considers-selling-its-data-centers-what-would-that-mean-to-partners.htm -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly)

Subject: Verizon weighs $10 Billion sale of enterprise assets Message-ID: <n1o4qc$erb$1@dont-email.me> Liana B. Baker and Greg Roumeliotis NEW YORK -- Verizon Communications Inc. is exploring a sale of its enterprise assets which could be worth as much as $10 billion, according to people familiar with the matter, as the largest U.S. wireless carrier seeks to focus on its core business. The sale would include the business formerly known as MCI, which provides landline and Internet services for large business customers, as well as Terremark, its data center unit, the people said this week. http://www.cnbc.com/2015/11/07/verizon-weighs-10-billion-sale-of-enterprise-assets-sources.html -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly)

Subject: Verizon Abandons Affordable WiFi Program in Atlanta Message-ID: <n1o500$g69$1@dont-email.me> by Edgar Alvarez Less than a year after starting OmniLynx, a program that provided low-cost WiFi access to schools in Huntsville, Alabama, Verizon is cutting ties with it. As reported by WHNT-TV, the city's education system recently sent a letter to customers notifying them of the network's decision. "We regret to inform you that your wireless service will terminate effective November 30, 2015," read the Huntsville school district's letter. "This termination of service and any resulting inconvenience has resulted from the service provider, Verizon Wireless." With OmniLynx, Huntsville residents would pay roughly $48 per month for unlimited data, powered by a free Verizon LTE hotspot which came included with the contract-free plan. According to Dr. Casey Wardnyski, the Huntsville schools superintendent, what ticked Verizon off was that people outside his area started taking advantage of the initiative. In response, he told AL.com Verizon "had the capability to limit the service area," calling its vision "short-sighted." While it isn't clear if Verizon plans to reverse the call on pulling out of the partnership, the network did tell WHNT-TV it "will continue to discuss this situation directly with Huntsville city schools." http://www.engadget.com/2015/11/06/verizon-omnilynx-alabama/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly)

Subject: Centurylink Exec Says "We Aren't A Telcom Anymore" Message-ID: <n1o5d0$ho1$1@dont-email.me> CenturyLink Channel Chief: 'We Aren't A Telco Anymore, We Are An IT Company' by Gina Narcisi Not Your Grandfather's Telephone Company Blake Wetzel, vice president of CenturyLink's partner program, Channel Alliance, has worn many hats at CenturyLink, working in operations and finance roles since the telecommunications company was known as Qwest Communications. Six years ago, Wetzel joined the indirect sales side of the house and was tasked with evaluating and building up a more robust program that could support more partners. In a Q&A with CRN, Wetzel explained that partners might be surprised to learn that CenturyLink has become a full-blown IT services provider. He shared how the company has a lot to offer the channel and [said the firm] is willing to work with partners through a variety of models - CenturyLink doesn't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. http://www.crn.com/slide-shows/networking/300078729/centurylink-channel-chief-we-arent-a-telco-anymore-we-are-an-it-company.htm -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly)
