One thing, however, I hope I may without offense affirm of these swamp-dwellers--they were pious. To what deity their veneration was given — whether, like the Egyptians, they worshiped the crocodile, or, like other Americans, adored themselves, I do not presume to guess.

There's crowd-sourced information here: https://downdetector.com/status/verizon-wireless . Local broadcaster WNCN has other information here: http://wncn.com/2015/09/21/sprint-and-verizon-customers-report-problems-in-central-nc/ . Their report leads off with "RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) - An accidental fiber line cut caused widespread outages of cellular service for cellphone providers in central North Carolina for nearly seven hours Monday ... ." More by fishing with "Raleigh Verizon cellular outage" as bait. HTH. Cheers, -- tlvp

The outage was caused by a construction crew inadvertently severing a Time-Warner Cable fiber line. That line was also used to provide backhaul service for various local Verizon towers.
