The extravagant expenditure of public money is an evil not to be measured by the value of that money to the people who are taxed for it.  - Chester A. Arthur

Subject: Here's Why You'll Pay Less for Your Wireless Plan Next Year Message-ID: <20141217040534.GA8122@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Carriers like Verizon, ATT&T and T-Mobile are fighting a price war that could last months by Kevin Kelleher This hasn't exactly been a banner year for wireless carriers' stocks. While the S&P 500 Index has risen 8% this year, AT&T and Verizon, which together control about 83% of the wireless market, are down 8%. The two companies have fared especially poorly in the last month: AT&T is down 10% and Verizon is down 12%, while the S&P is down only 2%. The reason is one that may delight consumers and concern investors: A price war, in which rivals cut prices to steal market share from one another, has broken out among carriers, and it's only likely to get more intense next year. The longer a price war endures, the more choice consumers will have, though it means financial pain for carriers. http://time.com/3636440/t-mobile-verizon-att/ -- Bill Horne Moderator

Needless to say, I've never called back :-) . And no "bad cop" scene ever ensued. Subject: CenturyLink, Windstream say FCC's CAF-II timeline is too restrictive Message-ID: <20141217040905.GA8144@telecom.csail.mit.edu> By Sean Buckley CenturyLink and Windstream are prime candidates for FCC's Connect America Fund Phase II (CAF-II) since both telcos serve a large swatch of Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets, but both telcos are concerned that the timeline to meet the 10/1 Mbps requirement is not realistic. The FCC ruled last week that service providers that want to take advantage of CAF funding will have to deliver broadband speeds of at least 10 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream. By increasing the requirement from 4/1 Mbps, the regulator said that it will be able to make certain that rural consumers get the same broadband speeds that 99 percent of urban Americans receive. http://www.fiercetelecom.com/story/centurylink-windstream-say-fccs-caf-ii-timeline-too-restrictive/2014-12-15 -or- http://goo.gl/lL9e12 -- Bill Horne Moderator
