A petition is asking the United States Federal Communications
Commission to allocate a national three-digit number to suicide
prevention hotlines.

This may not be technically possible, since all the codes of the
format N11 have been allocated. A toll-free number that can be
represented by letters that spell an easily-remembered name may be the
only workable option for landline telephone users. For mobile users,
a short number such as #4141 could be allocated. Outside North
America, some countries may already have established national
short numbers for suicide prevention hotlines.
In Toronto's subway system, trackside pay telephones are equipped with
a button that places a free call to a local suicide prevention
hotline. This feature takes advantage of the programmable buttons on
certain models of payphone that allow single-button access to numbers
such as taxi services, telecommunications carrier offices or (in this
case) a hotline.

Do You Love Your Phone Company?
Many of you might be dissatisfied with your cell phone company, based on
the findings in a new Consumer Reports survey. The magazine spoke with
more than 63,000 subscribers about their carriers in its latest survey
on cell phone carriers.
In this survey, it seems size does matter! The smaller phone carriers
received some of the highest ratings. One company called Consumer
Cellular ranked "High" for value, data service and customer support.
Ting, a newer mobile service, also scored "High" for value and data
service as well.

Subject: CenturyLink Said to Seek to Acquire Rackspace Hosting

CenturyLink Inc., the Louisiana-based landline phone service provider,
is seeking to acquire Rackspace Hosting Inc. to further expand into
cloud-computing services, according to people familiar with the
situation.
CenturyLink has discussed the idea with San Antonio-based Rackspace,
which last month said it is still conducting an internal review of its
strategic options, according to the people, who asked not to be
identified talking about private information. One person said a deal
may not be reached for the company, which had a stock-market valuation
of $5.33 billion at the end of last week.

Subject: CenturyLink dispatch center in Columbia MO to close in January

COLUMBIA - CenturyLink is closing down the regional dispatch center on
625 Cherry St. on Jan. 13.
The 40 employees can apply for positions in the company, spokesman Mark
Molzen said in an email. Employees who leave CenturyLink will receive
severance packages.
