We must fight spam for the same reason we fight crime: not because we are naive enough to believe that we will ever stamp it out, but because we do not want the kind of world that results when no one stands against crime.  - Geoffrey Welsh

Subject: Verizon sees phone calls running solely on LTE by 2016 Message-ID: <20140814164204.423E0ACD@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Verizon sees phone calls running solely on LTE by 2016 Wireless phone calls still run on the older 3G network, but that's poised to change thanks to a technology called voice over LTE. by Roger Cheng The first Verizon Wireless smartphones to run voice calls exclusively over the 4G LTE network won't hit the market until the first half of 2016. That's according to Verizon Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo, speaking to Wall Street at an investor conference on Tuesday. Shammo said the company plans to begin offering voice calls over its LTE network toward the end of the year, which promises potentially higher audio quality and features such as a cloud-based video address book. Even with the transition, Verizon will continue to rely on its 3G network for additional coverage. http://www.cnet.com/news/verizon-sees-phone-calls-running-solely-on-lte-by-2016/ Bill -- E. August 13, 2014 Streaming video titan Netflix recently posted new data indicating which are the best and worst Internet Service Providers (ISPs) when it comes to streaming its videos on their networks. In a post entitled "Netflix ISP Speed Index for July," Netflix lists the top 16 U.S.-based ISPs for streaming based on average connection speed, according to data compiled by the company. Netflix bases its conclusions on data that it tracks from 50 million Netflix subscribers who watch more than 1 billion hours of content per month. http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/netflix-rates-verizon-as-worst-cablevision-as-best-isps-for-streaming/#ixzz3ANyNF7cx -or- http://goo.gl/wqn9W8 Bill -- E. More damage was found on the fiber cable than originally detected and restoration work continues on Internet connections, the company said. The lines were damaged by the Carlton Complex fire. Subject: Goldman, Verizon Demand Virtual Networking From Cisco Message-ID: <20140814170117.7C806ACD@telecom.csail.mit.edu> This story caught my eye: major U.S. corporations are demanding that Cisco take over the heavily-unionized switching business, thus allowing the ILEC's to do without their troblesome labor unions. Bill - - - - - - - - - - - - By STEVE ROSENBUSH The Morning Download: Goldman, Verizon Demand Virtual Networking From Cisco Good morning. Big companies are ramping up demands that networking equipment makers such as Cisco Systems Inc. offer cheaper, software-based alternatives to traditional products. Some of Cisco Systems Inc.'s big customers, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc., are adding to the pressure on Cisco Chief Executive John Chambers to accelerate the company's push into software-driven networking, Bloomberg reports. The networking giant agreed to host the internal phone and video conferencing systems of Coca-Cola Enterprises, for instance, after the bottler threatened to find a new supplier. "By the end of this year, there won't be any more Cisco boxes in our offices," CIO Esat Sezer said. http://blogs.wsj.com/cio/2014/08/13/the-morning-download-goldman-verizon-demand-virtual-networking-from-cisco/ -or- http://goo.gl/mwlURQ -- E. Subject: Why I'm willing to pay an early terminiation fee to leave Verizon Message-ID: <20140814170931.1DCCEACD@telecom.csail.mit.edu> MICROSOFT EXPLORER by Andy Patrizio Opinion Why I'm willing to pay an early termination fee to leave Verizon. These days, most people use smartphones for everything but making phone calls. I never got the memo, however, and still dial out numbers on a regular basis. So service means something. At the same time, I want a phone that runs well and is well-supported. Currently, I have neither. So, come October, after Tim Cook introduces the iPhone 6, count me among those who will be queueing up for one. On AT&T. I gave Windows Phone and Verizon a chance and they have failed. It means an Early Termination Fee (ETF) of a few hundred bucks, but maybe I can make that selling the phone on Glyde. Here's why: 1. Verizon's throttling ... 2. Lousy Coverage ... 3. Cost ... 4. Samsung let me down ... http://www.networkworld.com/article/2464002/microsoft-subnet/why-im-willing-to-pay-an-early-termination-fee-to-leave-verizon.html -or- http://goo.gl/k7XVXm Bill -- E.
