The same thing is true of the USA Today crossword puzzle and it's still shown as late as today's paper. It also lists an 800 number for callers using a credit card. See below for details. December 28, 2012, 12:37 p.m. The Federal Communications Commission has officially proposed new rules that would lower interstate pay-phone rates for prisoners and their families, an issue it has been considering for nine years. The agency said it is proposing rate caps, eliminating per-call fees, and other changes that would lower the costs of keeping in touch for inmates, who in some states can pay as much as $15 for a 15-minute phone call. ... http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-fcc-prison-phone-rates-20121228,0,4535768.story

Subject: Re: Disruptions: The Real Hazards of E-Devices on Planes Message-ID: <2012.01.03.anonymous001@telecom-digest.org> The chatter and debate on this simple topic never ceases to amaze me. There is one, small positive: the ability to use a phone on a plane. There are many, many negatives....just a few: * Interference to the aircraft systems. * Irritation to nearby passengers * Disruption to the ground based cellular network * A generally rotten quality call that WILL be dropped in short order As an RF engineer who has been brought into countless cases of resolving intermodulation interference, I can state without reservation that operating multiple cellular phones in a closed tube environment like an airliner WILL create multiple interference instances up and down the spectrum, as well as potential receiver overload and quieting. And, the effect of EVERY aircraft based cellular call upon the ground-based system (illuminating multiple cell sites in multiple systems and regions) is real, and does not depend on a 'what if' situation. If you try to make a call from 5,000 ft, you WILL disrupt ground-based calls. Just because the common man does not understand something does not make it acceptable behavior. ***** Moderator's Note ***** The person who posted this is known to me, and he is a practicing Radio Frequency Engineer.
