Subject: Do Internet Offers For Low-Income Families Come With
Strings Attached?
For years, L.A. neighborhoods like Watts and Boyle Heights have been
stuck on the wrong side of a "digital divide": few families in these
low-income communities have access to computers and high-speed
internet.
This long-standing problem has become an acute educational crisis
during the pandemic. Many children, particularly those in middle- and
high school, need internet access in order to do their homework.

AT&T Provided FCC Bunk Broadband Availability Data Across 20 States
from the driving-blind dept
By Karl Bode
We've noted repeatedly that despite a lot of talk from U.S. leaders
and regulators about the "digital divide," the United States doesn't
actually know where broadband is available. Historically the FCC has
simply trusted major ISPs -- with a vested interest in downplaying
coverage and competition gaps -- to tell the truth. The FCC's
methodology has also long been flawed, considering an entire area to
be connected if just one home in a census tract has service. The
results are ugly: the FCC's $350 million broadband availability map
all but hallucinates broadband availability and speed (try it
yourself).

Subject: 5G in mmWave spectrum gains a bit more traction
By Mike Dano
There was a time, not so long ago, that 5G in millimeter wave (mmWave)
spectrum was viewed with a healthy amount of skepticism, if not
outright incredulity.
For example, a report in 2017 sponsored by companies in the cable
industry pointed to "clear technical, operational and aesthetic
challenges" in deploying 5G in mmWave spectrum.

Subject: AT&T Misses Q1 Estimates, Citing Impact Of COVID-19
By Bradley Lamb
AT&T reported first-quarter results impaired by COVID-19, missing
revenue targets, as WarnerMedia operations suffered the worst impact
from the virus.
Revenue came in at $ 42.8 billion, which was below the consensus view
of Wall Street analysts, who were looking for $ 44.2 billion. Earnings
of 84 cents a share also missed estimates, but AT&T said without the
virus earnings would have been 89 cents, ahead of the consensus of 85
cents.
