The following article describes the T1 system in technical detail,
including 'framing' and synchronization.  On page 1440, they describe
how they use the 1,000 Hz tone for testing purposes, and other test
procedures and equipment for T1.

The BSTJ says T1 was based on earlier experiments, including field
trials, of the PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) system.  A January 1962

CenturyLink continues to draw the ire of various consumers:

   CenturyLink is not only the worst ISP in the world, but is
   indisputably the worst provider of any service in human history.

   300-500ms latency spikes at all times. Always over 50ms to the
   first hop (usually several times that.) Even with ancient
   technology this is not realistically possible. The only explanation
   is that their NIDs and hubs are nests of baling wire.

   Peter thought he was doing something pretty sweet thing for Verizon
   Wireless. After fours years with AT&T, not only was he switching
   over, but he was bringing a total of four phones with her. So
   forgive him for assuming that maybe Verizon wouldn't make the
   entire experience a completely miserable one.

   When we say miserable, we mean it -- reading through Peter's sage
   brought to mind climbing up Mt. Everest in a blizzard wearing only
   flip-flops.
