What happens on the Internet stays on the Internet.
That truth was laid bare on Thursday, when Snapchat, the popular
mobile messaging service, agreed to settle charges by the Federal
Trade Commission that messages sent through the company's app did not
disappear as easily as promised.
Snapchat has built its service on a pitch that has always seemed
almost too good to be true: that people can send any photo or video
to friends and have it vanish without a trace. That promise has
appealed to millions of people, particularly younger Internet users
seeking refuge from nosy parents, school administrators and potential
employers.
But the commission charged that there were several easy ways to save
messages from the service, and in settling the accusations, the
company agreed not to misrepresent the disappearing nature of its
messages.
The company's early popularity and hype led to a multibillion-dollar
buyout offer last year from Facebook, which Snapchat's leaders
spurned in the hope of something better. But the settlement announced
on Thursday set a different tone, one that could extend to the many
other start-ups that promise security, privacy and anonymity as an
antidote to the public nature of Facebook and Twitter.

The Federal Communications Commission must continue to craft
policies that promote all spectrum bands --- high, mid, and
low --- for unlicensed uses, Democratic FCC Commissioner Jessica
Rosenworcel said.
In remarks at an event sponsored by WifiForward, an industry
group whose members include Google Inc. and Comcast Corp.,
Rosenworcel voiced strong support for what she described as an
"unlicensed spectrum game plan"--new strategies that, in her view,
"deserve attention up front, in policy prime time."
"It should no longer be an afterthought in our spectrum policy,"
she said.
Rosenworcel's latest remarks come less than two weeks before the
FCC's May 15 meeting, where the agency will vote on rules that
will govern the first-ever incentive auction of spectrum
scheduled to take place in 2015.

I have a pair of IBM SOHO Assistants -- this is the model 7852-001 --
apparently the very first of a series. These units also go by the part
number 19H7964.
They have a pair of telephone line inputs, a port for a fax machine, a
telephone, and serial port for a PC. This particular model has 14.4
modem built in. The best I can remember, they could be used to forward
an inbound call on one line on out to a different number on the 2nd
line, could be used to divert fax machines to the fax output, had
answering machine capabilities for both inbound lines, and a whole host
of other cute tricks.
I had lent both of these out back in the days when a 14.4 modem was real
useful. That included some diskette with modem software, and,
importantly, a nice user manual explaining how to teach these things to
do all their tricks. When they came back, all I got was the unit itself.
I have searched the web over the years, and haven't come up with any
useful information. The closest I have been able to come up with is
several places that may still have these on their used equipment list --
which might include software and documentation. IBM itself, for several
years claimed the documentation was archived, and they would place it on
line for me -- but that never happened. Now, (maybe a couple years
back) they have been moved to the IBM extinct list.
Trying to search the FCC ID database has been a failure.
Does anyone out there happen to have any information on these? Almost
anything would be welcome.
