The FCC issued a bi-annual report, "Trends in Telephone Service", in May 2002 which lists total interstate toll calls at between 539 & 616 billion minutes and 10 minutes average per call for residential usage. I didn't see call volumes or total average minutes per call in there. I noticed the last BOC electromechanical switch was cut over in either '96 or '97 in there. Anyone familiar with the location & type? http://transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/Common_Carrier/Reports/FCC-State_Link/IAD/trend502.pdf

Subject: The spirit of invention continues at Bell Labs Message-ID: <1332728521.7412.YahooMailClassic@web161504.mail.bf1.yahoo.com> The world-famous mother of invention, Bell Labs, was itself a child of that mother of all monopolies, Ma Bell. And though Ma Bell in its old form is long gone, the laboratory soldiers on. Martha Teichner reports: It looks like some tiny, weird work of art. But it won three physicists from Bell Labs a Nobel Prize. It's the first transistor. "This was an invention from 1947," said Edward Eckert, the archivist for Alcatel Lucent - the AT&T spinoff that operates the labs today. "Without this, a cell phone would be the size of a building. This is the beginning of the microelectronics revolution, everything getting smaller." http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-3445_162-57404089/the-spirit-of-invention-continues-at-bell-labs/ -or- http://goo.gl/7XLjA

Apple had already given developers a heads-up about the change more than six months ago when it said in some iOS documentation that it was going to deprecate UDIDs. But it looks like Apple is moving ahead of schedule with pressure from lawmakers and the media. It can take more than a year to deprecate features because developers need time to adjust and change their apps. A few weeks ago, some of the bigger mobile-social developers told me that Apple had reached out and warned them to move away from UDIDs. But this is the first time Apple has issued outright rejections for using UDIDs. ... http://techcrunch.com/2012/03/24/apple-udids/

He wants to dominate the market for mobile payments, allowing cellphones to be used in place of cash or plastic to buy things. Already, 250 businesses around Boston allow consumers to use SCVNGR's LevelUp mobile app to pay, and Priebatsch says another 100 will come online soon. The system, deployed in eight other cities, is handling more than $1 million in transactions each month. One analyst believes the only app used by more consumers today for mobile payments is the Starbucks app. SCVNGR has had several incarnations. It started in 2008, enabling sites like museums or colleges to create text-based games that could be played on any mobile phone as players navigated a real-world environment. ... http://articles.boston.com/2012-03-25/business/31233218_1_mobile-payments-app-credit-card
