Language buried deep in the recently enacted National Defense
Authorization Act of 2012 could further delay LightSquared's launch of
a nationwide wireless data network. The clause, added to the 500-page
bill at the bequest of Reps. Michael R. Turner (R-Ohio) and Loretta
Sanchez (D-Calif.), prohibits the Federal Communications Commission
from approving LightSquared's request to begin commercial land-based
operations until the FCC "has resolved concerns" about possible
interference with military GPS systems.

Verizon Communications said today that veteran executive John Stratton
will take over for CEO Lowell McAdam at a key panel at the Consumer
Electronics Show.
Stratton will take part in the CES

Power Panel on Wednesday, which also includes Ford Motor CEO Alan
Mulally and Xerox CEO Ursula Burns. McAdam was originally slated to
participate but had to beg off in what is believed to be a personal matter.

The "Director Telephone System" in London was not directly put in to
provide 3L-4N numbers. That resulted from growth, which resulted in
complicated trunking systems in a mostly all-step environment,
resulting in the adoption of "Directors" (called senders in the Los
Angeles area and installed for the same reason in that all-step area).
The 3L-4N convention was what London adopted, and also adopted in many
places in North America, but merely a typographical device, since the
actual pulsing is of course numeric.
The article also says the first letter of exchange names was
capitalized even where it was not dialed, suggesting that was the only
case. In Dallas and Houton, and perhaps other places, the first
letter (capitalized) WAS dialed.

Sprint Nextel's first installation of its LTE service early this year in
four Southeastern U.S. cities will put Sprint right in the face of AT&T,
which it has bitterly fought over the latter's failed bid to acquire
T-Mobile USA.
AT&T is based in Dallas, and its wireless arm, AT&T Mobility, operates
out of Atlanta - two of the cities first on Sprint's list for LTE
service. Also due for early LTE service are Houston and
San Antonio, Texas.
