I came across this article in Wikipedia: hope it's of interest.
During the early years of telephone service, communities that required
more than 10,000 telephone numbers, whether dial service was available
or not, utilized exchange names to distinguish identical numerics for
different customers.
When dial service was introduced (typically during the period of 1910 to
1970), in such multiple exchange communities, customers would normally
dial the first two or three letters of the exchange name, followed by
the numeric digits.

Reports from Verizon and AT&T suggest they could be off by as much
as 45%
UBS' Maynard Um has built a spreadsheet for Apple (AAPL) in which
he assumes the company sold 30 million last quarter -- some 800,000
unit higher than the 29.2 million average of 20 Wall Street
analysts we polled over the weekend.
But when he totes up the sales numbers coming in from Apple's U.S.
carriers, his 30 million estimate doesn't sound quite right. On
Wednesday, for example, Verizon (VZ) reported sales of 4.2 million
iPhones in the Christmas quarter, more than twice the 2 million the
carrier activated in the September quarter.

Verizon CEO Cancels Appearance at CES 2012

With only days left to go before the start of CES 2012, Verizon has
announced that CEO Lowell McAdam will not be able to attend the
keynote address his company was planning for the show.
Originally scheduled to speak at 11 AM Tuesday morning, McAdam has
had to cancel his appearance at the annual trade show in Las Vegas
due to a scheduling conflict that arose. Verizon is currently
securing another executive to attend the event, but there has been
no notice yet as to who it may be.

It's amazing what you can dig up when you get beyond the fifth or
sixth page of google results: I found a site called "US Uncut", which
charges that Verizon made over 12 Billion in profits "last year",
(which I presume means 2010), but paid nothing in taxes "for two years
now".
I'm curious if anyone on the list can confirm or deny that.

The survey analyst who is tallying results from the Telecocm Digest
survey reports that she has received only a few surveys to date, and
none are from the frequent contributor addresses I published at the
end of last year.
I'm very surprised, so I'll emphasize that this is your chance to
speak up and tell me how I can produce a better publication. You can
tell me exactly what you think of me, or the Digest, or both, and
I'll never know who it was that said it: the analyst isn't going to
pass along any personnaly-identifiable information.
Man, if I had a chance like that, I would be typing a mile a
minute! Get with it, readers! This is your chance to be heard!
