We long ago stopped using PCAnywhere and went to Logmein. Even that
is not allowed if the customer is processing credit cards. I hear
tell of a story that a certain restaurant franchisee had PCA installed
on his machine with the default password and got several credit cards
stolen from the Russian hackers. It created quite a stir and led to
the legislation and the corporate mandating that all affiliates use a
security company to protect the data.
Since their stores were all in a 50-mile radius, it didn't affedt me
much, but I now have to go to the site to do maintenance.

Has anybody verified or disproved the TeamViewer publisher's
claim that TeamViewer is approved for use in the German banking
industry (and, by implication, is pretty tight...)?
I've been using TeamViewer for a number of years now and can't
figure out why anybody would use anything else. But all I use it
for is personal stuff, not business.

Summary: SNL writers create some clever spoof commercials and the latest
one about Verizon and it's 4G LTE network is an instant classic. I am
sure many readers can relate to this skit.
My MoTR podcast co-host Kevin Tofel and I were talking about the
confusing branding of Android devices while recording MoTR #260 this
weekend and then I saw all over Twitter that there was a great new SNL
skit. The Verizon LTE skit is shown here:

statement about focusing on quality instead of quantity may help with
the issue of too many Android devices for anyone to make an informed

A newly discovered malicious application circulating on third party
Android markets in China has created a botnet that contains more than
100,000 compromised devices, researchers report.
Researchers from North Carolina State University and Symantec say the
malware, dubbed RootStrap (NC State) installs a known remote access
trojan (RAT) named BMaster (Symantec). It is capable of stealing a
wide range of information from infected Android devices running
versions earlier than 2.3.3 and 3.0, and may be ginning up illilcit
profits with premium SMS and telephony scams, according to the report
from NC State and Symantec.

A high-ranking federal official and aviation industry leaders called on
Wednesday for rules to prevent future interference with GPS, looking
beyond a proposal by would-be hybrid mobile operator LightSquared that
may be doomed by broad opposition.
LightSquared's proposed cellular data network can't be made compatible
with GPS, and the government should set interference standards to
prevent future conflicts over companies trying to establish such
services, Deputy Transportation Secretary John Porcari told a House
Aviation Subcommittee hearing on Wednesday.

According to a website called, appropriately enough, pissedconsumer.com,
CenturyLink isn't making many friends lately. Of course, annonymous
statements have to be taken with a grain of salt, but here's a tip: when
people make basic grammar and spelling mistakes,
it's often due to anger.
One example:
"After being lied to twice about their service and the price. I
cancelled service before it was set up only to be billed for their
mistake. I received absolutely no service from them, yet have been
turned in for debt collection because of their mistake."

Mike Trang likes to use his iPhone 4 as a GPS device, helping him get
around in his job. Now and then, his younger cousins get ahold of it,
and play some YouTube videos and games.
But in the past few weeks, there has been none of that, because AT&T
Inc. put a virtual wheel clamp on his phone. Web pages wouldn't load
and maps wouldn't render. Forget about YouTube videos - Trang's data
speeds were reduced to dial-up levels.
"It basically makes my phone useless," said Trang, an Orange County,
Calif. property manager.
The reason: AT&T considers Trang to be among the top 5 percent of the
heaviest cellular data users in his area. Under a new policy, AT&T
has started cutting their data speeds as part of an attempt to manage
data usage on its network.
