It therefore weighed in on Thursday when the FCC voted to approve an order urged by President Obama; the order will result in the imposition of rules on broadband Internet services under a law that was enacted in the era of the steam locomotive and the telegraph. Verizon issued its press release in typewritten form lacking only a bottle of whiteout. Verizon's press release, which consists of a character-based version of the text in International Morse code, and a photogrph of a typewritten text, created, apparently, with the oldest typewriter still in the corporation's possession, is at http://publicpolicy.verizon.com/blog/entry/fccs-throwback-thursday-move-imposes-1930s-rules-on-the-internet ... and although I'm tempted to criticize the PR department for claiming that "Readers in the 21st century can read the translated statement (in a .pdf file)", I'll just ask why a corporation which was formed in the twentieth century feels the need to criticize the government using imitations of nineteenth-century technology: could it be that Verizon is nostalgic for a simpler time, when "Mother Bell" was the only means of communication other than Western Union? Verizon's high-handed demands that the new players in the online world pay tribute to the Caesars of an old empire which was so recently invaded by the Mongol hordes named "competition" and "choice" is, IMNSHO, proof prima facie that the FCC's actions were both justified and necessary. Bill P.S. I have a Verizon ADSL line at my home. My netflix service has been inoperative for several days, except when I log on to Netflix using a VPN.
