Subject: Verizon will fix your landline in a month, or give you wireless right now Message-ID: <mcjggd$320$1@dont-email.me> NYC outage gives Verizon another chance to hawk wireless landline replacement. by Jon Brodkin Verizon's aging copper landline telephone network has been offline for numerous customers in Manhattan over the past few weeks, giving Verizon another chance to convince customers to ditch their landlines for wireless service. This has been a recurring theme for Verizon, which often tells customers their phone lines can't be fixed right away but that they can switch to "Voice Link," a wireless replacement for landlines. Voice Link isn't regulated as a utility like the copper landlines are, and it can't last through power outages the way copper lines can. http://arstechnica.com/business/2015/02/verizon-will-fix-your-landline-in-a-month-or-give-you-wireless-right-now/ -or- http://goo.gl/8Jrxgd -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly)

Subject: FCC to prevent phone companies from screwing over copper customers Message-ID: <mcjgll$3hr$1@dont-email.me> by Jon Brodkin Dissenting Republican scoffs at "Chicken Little" concerns. Amid complaints that phone companies such as AT&T and Verizon are letting copper networks deteriorate, the Federal Communications Commission today said it will examine the allegations and develop rules that maintain customers' access to emergency services even after old copper networks are discontinued. Today's vote is one of the first steps in planning for the discontinuation of the primarily copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The PSTN is being replaced by Internet Protocol (IP)-based voice services that rely on network technologies such as fiber, cable, and wireless. AT&T and Verizon are anxious to make the transition because they want to shed costly infrastructure and century-old utility rules that likely won't apply to Voice over IP (VoIP) services. Customers from around the country have complained that the companies are letting the copper networks rot in order to push them onto largely unregulated services. http://arstechnica.com/business/2014/11/fcc-to-prevent-phone-companies-from-screwing-over-copper-customers/ -or- http://goo.gl/2H022o -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly)

BY STATESMAN Staff and Wire Reports The Idaho House voted 68-1 Thursday [February 19] to send a stopgap measure to the Senate that would cover the costs for Idaho school districts to keep their broadband Internet going. The lone dissent was Rep. John Gannon, D-Boise, according to the Spokesman-Review. http://www.idahostatesman.com/2015/02/19/3653149/school-broadband-update-house.html#storylink=cpy -or- http://goo.gl/vejnHV -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly)

Subject: Comcast mulls ways to monetize Wi-Fi Message-ID: <3d2af602-7070-4b34-9245-f7490e5d2a06@googlegroups.com> By Mike Robuck, CEDmagazine, 02/24/2015 Comcast executives Neil Smit and CEO Brian Roberts said on this morning's fourth-quarter and year-end earnings call that Comcast was looking at ways to monetize Wi-Fi/wireless that could result in a launch over the coming months. Both Roberts and Smit declined to provide specifics on what the new Wi-Fi products or services would be. During the Q&A, Smits was asked about Cablevision's recent launch of its Freewheel Wi-Fi phone service, which lacks a cellular service as a backup connection for when a caller isn't in a Wi-Fi hotspot, and whether Comcast would offer Wi-Fi based products such as apps or a mobility service. http://www.cedmagazine.com/news/2015/02/comcast-mulls-ways-to-monetize-wi-fi?et_cid=4431712&et_rid=652835436&type=cta -or- http://tinyurl.com/pejlzc9 Neal McLain
