CenturyLink's OSS build sets stage for software-defined networking ecosystem

CenturyLink's recent move to implement a foundation for software-defined
networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) with
Ericsson reflects the reality that the real value of these
technologies won't truly be seen until a large service provider like
CenturyLink deploys it on a large scale.
By deploying the Swedish vendor's next-gen OSS/BSS platform, CenturyLink
will be able to improve service delivery times and control for its
business customers.

Cox Communications outages:

Had a major outage with them last night. Cable Modem just kept trying
to get the downstream and couldn't. So I rang up Cox, said they'd send
someone out between 5PM and 7PM today. I told them roll their Tier 2
people - this was an amplifier temp control pad issue.
Service was up and running this morning.

Now Is the Perfect Time to Build a Fast, City-Owned Broadband Service

Shortly after taking office, Mayor Ed Murray finally pulled the plug on
Gigabit Seattle, the financially challenged fiber- optic-broadband
partnership that was once the centerpiece of his predecessor's internet
strategy. But while Gigabit's failure was certainly a disappointment, it
is also an opportunity: to give a giant collective municipal finger to
those monopolistic [people] at Comcast, CenturyLink, and Wave.
Now that the market has failed to address our broadband woes, Seattle is
free to reconsider building a city-owned municipal system. And with
Seattle City Light in the process of evaluating technologies for its
coming "smart meter" rollout, the timing couldn't be more perfect.

Verizon is reportedly investigating two more breaches at retailers that
appear to have been hacked at the same time as the massive holiday data
breach at Target.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Verizon contacted the unnamed
retailers last week.

Heavy broadband users should help shoulder the cost of their traffic,
but Verizon Communications does not give preferential treatment to some
Web traffic, the company's CEO said Monday.
Still, Verizon has had its own interconnection discussions with Netflix
related to increasing the video provider's traffic speeds on the
broadband carrier's networks, Verizon Chairman and CEO Lowell McAdam
said. Following a Sunday announcement that Comcast and Netflix had
reached an interconnection deal, McAdam said his company has had similar
discussions with the video provider.

AT&T's U.S. Vision Rankles Europe as Vodafone Bid on Hold

AT&T Inc. Chief Executive Officer Randall Stephenson comes to Europe
several times a year bearing a message: The region would do well to
learn from the Americans in developing new mobile technology. Problem
is, Europe isn't particularly interested in the lesson.
"I don't think there is a huge amount of teaching that can be done to
the Europeans," Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao said of Stephenson's
assessments during a Feb. 10 meeting with reporters in New York. Though
Europe has lagged behind the U.S. in introducing fourth-generation
networks -- something Stephenson has repeatedly pointed out -- "where we
launch 4G, we have good results," Colao said.
