I was working at Bell Labs back then; I remember some of what we heard from
the group.
- The Teredo worm is the enemy of submerged cable!
- They were trying to extrapolate the lifetime of tubes [hoping for 20
yrs] on the basis of less than a year of data. This was JUST before
transistors appeared, let alone became reliable.

bottoms with copper. I'm surprised that the worms could range to the

I know a number of CWA workers for various employers. In my opinion,
CWA today is a weak union. Maybe better than nothing, but not very
effective if the employer is determined to shove an anti-labor policy
onto its employees.
In my opinion, today's economic climate requires much better
protection for workers. Workers have lost a lot of fringe benefits
they once enjoyed and wages have not kept up with inflation. I think
there is a need for unions today. However, I think unions are stuck
in the past or focused on the wrong issues (like social issues) and
thus not very attractive to workers to join nor able to gain things
for its members.
With more and more baby boomers retiring, pensions are a critical
issue, but many employers have cut back on contracted pension
benefits. It's really hard for a senior citizen.

Here is something I would really like to know.
The RBOCs span a spectrum. On one end, you have Verizon, who fires
employees if their (sic) repair copper or just rips (sic) it out of
the ground.
On the other end, you have CenturyLink, the only RBOC to prominently
display its PHONE services on its website. On AT&T's website, finding
their POTS pages involves digging through layers of menus and hidden
links.
Furthermore, CenturyLink actually publicly touts the advantages of
home phones, 2 clicks away from their homepage:

That's why all these reports of how much everyone hates CenturyLink
strike me as odd. It's the only RBOC that actually puts on a show of
caring about what they do, as the other RBOCs just clearly want out
and don't pretend to hide that fact.
Personally, I have more respect for CenturyLink than any other RBOC,
since, at least if only on their website, they show that they care.
And, maybe this is atypical, but I have never received good customer
service from AT&T or Verizon. I have always received excellent service
from CenturyLink, from Americans working in US call centers.
If someone wants to clarify this or set me straight, please do.
