John Kay was a refugee from East Germany who escaped at the age of 5,
and made his way to America, just in time for the Sixties. He was a
seminal force in Rock, and his band Seppenwolf attained super-star
status before the term was common. Kay saw the changes coming over
America with the end of Vietnam and the start of the Nixon presidency.
But for the fact that our press was still free, Haldeman and Nixon
might have succeeded in altering the basic shape of our government,
and Kay wrote the song "Monster" in protest over what he saw
happening: after all, he had seen it before.

Who's Missing From Today's SOPA Hearing? A Short List
The House Judiciary Committee will meet today for a hearing on
the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). What could have
been an opportunity for the committee to hear from a variety of
stakeholders has devolved into a parade of pro-SOPA
partisans. Scheduled to testify are representatives from the
Register of Copyrights, Pfizer Global Security, the Motion
Picture Association of America, the AFL-CIO, and Mastercard
Worldwide, many of which helped to draft this legislation in the
first place, and didn't let anyone else into the room. The only
scheduled witness in opposition to the bill is Katherine Oyama,
policy counsel on copyright and trademark law for Google.
The curtain rises a little more each day: Comcast is able to pack the
FCC's public meetings, and nothing was ever said. Now, the Judiciary
committee of "our" House of Representatives excludes opinions that
their owners^H^H^H^H^H^H contributors don't choose to let them hear.

Across the Web today, you may have a hard time accessing your
favorite sites. ... Those sites and logos are blacked out to
draw attention to American Censorship Day, a major effort by a
coalition of dozens of groups including Public Knowledge, the
Electronic Frontier Foundation, Mozilla and Free Press to kill
the "Stop Online Piracy Act". SOPA (H.R. 3261) is a bill moving
through the House of Representatives that could rip apart the
fabric of the open Internet, and introduce a new regime of online
censorship.
