We must fight spam for the same reason we fight crime: not because we are naive enough to believe that we will ever stamp it out, but because we do not want the kind of world that results when no one stands against crime.  - Geoffrey Welsh

That's the claim made in this month's "Wired" magazine. Most of us trust that a string of letters, numbers and characters is enough to protect our bank accounts, email and credit cards. But hackers are breaking into computer systems and hosts of user names and passwords on the Web with increasing regularity. And because so much of our personal information is stored in the cloud, hackers can trick customer service agents into resetting passwords. Some Internet companies say the trade-offs -- convenience and privacy -- are necessary to protect our data. Privacy advocates say that price is too high. Diane and her guests discuss the illusion of online security and whether you can make your accounts harder to crack. Guests Simon Davies founder of Privacy International. Cecilia Kang technology reporter for the Washington Post. Kevin Mitnick information security expert and former hacker. http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2012-12-05/illusion-online-security

Hey, where are you going? by Casey Johnston Dec 5 2012 Ars Technica Verizon is starting to contact customers this week about allowing the telecom to sell their data-including location, browsing information, and mobile app usage-to third-party marketers in exchange for coupons. The company promises one coupon up front, with the potential for e-mails, texts, snail mail, or mobile ads with more offers based on the data collected. The program is called Verizon Selects and is Verizon's attempt to bridge the gap between how marketers reach mobile users and what mobile users (supposedly) want to see from marketers. Verizon says it will analyze the information listed above along with "customer demographic and interest data" to "create specific insights." ... http://arstechnica.com/business/2012/12/verizon-seeks-customers-to-spam-with-mobile-marketing-forever/ -or- http://goo.gl/sT6kz
