Subject: SpaceX Wants You to Be Able to Connect Your Smartphone
Directly to Starlink
T-Mobile could close coverage gaps from space as soon as 2024.
By Eric Mack
SpaceX has the green light to grow its Starlink broadband-from-space
constellation to more than 10,000 small satellites in low-Earth orbit
over the next several years, and it hopes to offer service for
smartphones via T-Mobile by the time just half of those flying routers
are operating.
SpaceX filed an application with the US Federal Communications
Commission on Dec. 6 seeking authorization to equip some of its
second-generation Starlink satellites with “direct-to-cellular” hardware.

Subject: CWA Helps Low-Income New Yorkers Get Connected
On October 30th volunteers from CWA Locals 1104 and 1109 teamed up with
Microsoft, Verizon, the New York Housing Authority Tennent’s
Association, to host a huge event for free internet at Howard Houses in
Brooklyn, NY. The event was part of CWA’s national “Get Connected”
initiative to boost enrollment in the Affordable Connectivity Program
(ACP). Roughly one third of New Yorkers lack regular internet access,
and CWAers have been working hard through legislative and volunteer
initiatives to close this connectivity gap.

Subject: What Is A Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO)? Working,
Services, and Examples
An MVNO rents infrastructure from one or more cellular network carriers
to provide competitive mobile connectivity plans.
By Chiradeep BasuMallick
A mobile virtual network operator is a communications service provider
that does not use its own infrastructure to provide connectivity but
leases out infrastructure from one or more cellular network carriers to
a more competitive mobile connectivity plan. This article explains the
workings, services, and examples of MVNOs.
The term mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) refers to a company that
sells wireless communication services. MVNOs employ third-party
infrastructure, as opposed to traditional mobile network operators
(MNOs), who operate their infrastructure. Instead, they rent it from
MNOs and use the infrastructure to provide a particular set of services
to their markets.

Subject: 5G Fixed-Wireless Fixation Forecasted for 2023
By Tommy Clift
As the anticipated recession-riddled clouds of 2023 roll in, enterprises
and research firms are reflecting on the past year and setting forth
their forecasts for the next. One of the emerging through lines:
fixed-wireless access (FWA) – particularly enabled by 5G – is going to
play an increasingly big role in connecting underserved and rural markets.
While addressing the digital divide has been chiefly a fiber-first
approach, it’s been a big year for 5G and FWA, and their cohesion may
yield a more influential role tackling the issue in 2023, according to
IBM GM Andrew Coward.

Subject: Technology: Preventing scams and fraud this holiday season
(Statepoint) Scams and fraud are more deceiving these days, reaching you
in more ways than ever before. The FTC reported 2.8 million fraud
reports from consumers in 2021 alone, with reported fraud losses
increasing 70% from 2020 and more than $5.8 million.
Scammers begin their traditional uptick at the start of the holiday
season, and identity theft protection expert Carrie Kerskie says being
aware of what new cyber and phone fraud trends to look out for is your
biggest defense against unwanted fraud.
