There was a TV commercial aired last night from a so-called public service organization opposed to Title II. They repeatedly claimed Title II was about new taxes to be added to communications services. ***** Moderator's Note ***** Please report back on the organization's name and address the next time you see that ad. Subject: David Carr, Times Critic and Champion of Media, Dies at 58 Message-ID: <mbma2s$g74$1@dont-email.me> I remember the documentary, a film about the New York Times. I realized, halfway through his obituary, that David Carr was the guy who had stolen the show; the two-pack-a-day voice of common sense, of stating the obvious, of making it seem like it was a great job and important and worth every dumb question he fielded so intelligently. I doubt David Carr ever wrote about telecommunications. I suppose I could check, but I'm exercising a point of privilege. I didn't know him, and never met him, but his passing makes me sad nonetheless. His was the unstoppable spirit - a force that leaped across the gap of media and showed how incredible a life can be for one who lives it well, at full speed, without hesitation, apology, or shame. It was fitting that he was gathered up suddenly, in the newsroom of the New York Times. I like to think he died at home. Subject: You'll never guess who is buying up Verizon's scraps Message-ID: <mbleoa$iln$1@dont-email.me> by Anders Bylund If you've been wondering how Verizon Communications and AT&T plan to pay for their massive spectrum auction bids, the answer is twofold but very simple. AT&T is largely issuing new debt to balance out that $18 billion expense; Verizon prefers to sell off surplus assets to finance its $10 billion spectrum spree. In fact, Verizon is lightening its asset portfolio more than the spectrum auction would require. In a couple separate deals, Big Red is raising more than $15 billion via asset sales. That choice was forced on Verizon by a smothering $108 billion long-term debt balance. http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2015/02/13/youll-never-guess-guess-who-is-buying-up-verizon-c.aspx -or- http://goo.gl/xxcNk6 -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly)
