Date: Sat, 21 Dec 2013 08:33:48 -0800 (PST) From: Neal McLain <nmclain.remove-this@and-this-too.annsgarden.com> To: telecomdigestmoderator.remove-this@and-this-too.telecom-digest.org. Subject: Anyone, anywhere can now get a 212 area code -- for big bucks Message-ID: <1aabbdfb-d883-42dc-a782-2feb4c17d4d8@googlegroups.com> By Natalie O'Neill, New York Post, December 21, 2013 | Anyone from the Deep South to the West Coast can now score the | once-exclusive 212 area code. | | New York wannabes from around the country can snag a | Manhattan-esque number for prices ranging from $100 to $15,000 | on the Web site 212areacode.com. | | Buyers are instructed to consult their cellphone carrier | companies to notify them of the change. They then pick from | dozens of available 212 phone numbers, paying for it online | via PayPal. Phone numbers boasting more zeros tend to cost | more than harder-to-remember ones. | | In March, the Internet phone provider Vonage launched a | petition asking the FCC to free up unused 212 numbers for | anyone nationwide. | | That irked actual New Yorkers who were stuck with less- | glamorous "464" or "347" codes. | | The Web site now claims to be perfectly legal, noting it's | "the ultimate source for a 212 area code." Source: http://tinyurl.com/212-big-bucks Obviously, 464 was a typo -- 464 is a reserve assignment for future overlay on 708. Presumably, the author meant 646 (overlay on 212). Two other NYC area codes are not mentioned: 929 (overlay on 718/347) and 917 (overlay on all five boroughs). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_York_area_codes Neal McLain ***** Moderator's Note ***** I can understand the idea as a source of stocking stuffers for what Jay Leno calls "The More Money Than Brains Club", but for serious use? Sorry, my circuit breaker trips at that point. I doubt anyone who is in a position to care does. The revolution is over, the Negroponte Switch is almost complete, and anyone who thinks a phone number in the "212" Area Code is special is likely to have one already. The only people who might be impressed are old, like me, and that means that they don't buy the things that someone who wants to claim some cachet from appearing to be in business in Manhattan is trying to sell. YMMV. Bill Horne Moderator

Subject: It's all downhill after today Message-ID: <20131221171653.GA6411@telecomdigest.net> I've got good news: one minutes ago, those in the Eastern Time Zone of the U.S. passed the Winter Solstice, and that means that from this momenet until the Summer Solstice, every day will get longer. I hope this makes your day a little brighter! Bill -- (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly) The only thing worth hoarding is time The best thing to share is wisdom

Subject: Verizon vows to disclose more about government data requests Message-ID: <l959t9$oqp$1@dont-email.me> Verizon vows to disclose more about government data requests By CBS/REUTERS December 20, 2013, 8: 51 AM Verizon Communications Inc. vowed to issue semi-annual reports on government requests for customer data, drawing praise from privacy advocates who sought such changes and marking the latest reform to controversial surveillance practices. This would be the first time that Verizon will publish such reports that would be easily accessible to shareholders. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/verizon-vows-to-disclose-more-about-government-data-requests/ - - - - - - - - Here's a rhetorical question: have you ever read a story that made you burst out laughing? Just curious. Subject: Google Fiber brings AT&T, CenturyLink to the ftth table Message-ID: <l95ac8$s28$1@dont-email.me> The news: Google Fiber may be a new broadband player, but its presence has driven two of the largest telcos AT&T and CenturyLink to serve up their own 1 Gbps fiber to the home (FTTH) service. http://www.fiercetelecom.com/special-reports/google-fiber-brings-att-centurylink-ftth-table-year-review-2013 -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly) And I'd have given anything To have my own PacMan game at home. Is that event, if it comes to pass, likely to become as ominous/disastrous/unfortunate as I suspect it will be? Thanks in advance for opinions/prognostications.
