Subject: CenturyLink, CWA Reach Contract Agreement for 8,000 Workers
By Edward Gately
CenturyLink and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) have
reached an early agreement on a three-year contract extension covering
more than 8,000 employees in 13 states.
The proposed deal provides wage increases of 3% in the first year,
then 2.5% in the second and third years. lt preserves job security
provisions and pension benefits, and reduces health care costs for
workers and retirees, according to the CWA.

Subject: There were two issues of the Telecom Digest today
First, a heads-up: if you get individual copies of Telecom Digest
emails, i.e., a separate email for each post, then this doesn't apply
to you. For those whom didn't know that was possible, please refer to
the FAQ, which is at
http://telecom-digest.org/faq.html .
I got a couple of emails asking me why there were two issues of the
Telecom Digest today, i.e., two separate issue numbers on two
separatte "digest" versions of our publication.
The explanation is simple: it's supposed to do that.
There are many ISP's, it turns out, and a *LOT* of company-owned Mail
Transfer Agents, which refuse emails which are over an arbitrary
"size" limit. Some companies do that to prevent or reduce spam, some
to cut down on photo sharing among employees, and some for no
discernable reason.
Long story short: the email robot that generates the Telecom Digest is
set to limit each issue of the Digest to five emails. Anything over
five, and the rest are put into a second issue, and (if needed), a
third, etc.
It's not something that happens very often, since I only approve a few
articles each day, but yesterday I got a little fuzzy-headed and sent
out seven posts.
Relax: it's supposed to do that. ☺

Subject: Woman receives bill for fraudulent account
DUNWOODY, Ga. - A woman told authorities Aug. 9 that she received a
bill from Verizon for $451 mailed to her residence on Redfield Drive
for an account she had not opened. The victim did not have a Verizon
account and told police that someone had used her identity to open a
new account at a Verizon store location. The person signed a two-year
installment agreement for three iPhone devices. She received a
previous notice that her identity had been compromised a few months
earlier. The installment plan was not approved because of an issue
confirming the proper identity. All paperwork concerning the identity
theft was placed into police files for evidence.

Subject: AZ: APS officials detail broadband plan
By Peter Aleshire
Arizona Public Service officials at a meeting of the Navajo County
Board of Supervisors recently offered additional details of a plan
that could improve the speed, reliability and capacity of the internet
in much of northern Arizona.
The presentation provided additional details on how the APS plan could
dovetail with efforts to eliminate the dangerous outages that have
plagued Rim Country for years, taking out both the internet and cell
phone service when mishaps cut the existing CenturyLink line between
Phoenix and Payson that passes through Camp Verde.
