AT&T Inc. is banking $4.85 billion from yesterday's cell-tower deal
with Crown Castle International Corp., giving it extra cash for
network upgrades, new spectrum and a possible European expansion.
The agreement, which involves leasing or selling 9,700 wireless towers
to Crown Castle, makes AT&T the latest carrier to offload antenna
sites to independent operators -- a transaction that lets the company
focus on growth areas or more profitable parts of the business.

Long wait times and a complete lack of transparency -- no, this isn't
a story about a typical call to Verizon customer support. It's what
happened when a security researcher discovered a critical privacy
vulnerability on Verizon's consumer site and tried, nearly in vain, to
get it patched. Back in August, researcher PRVSEC found that a simple
URL exploit could allow any subscriber using the site's 'Download to
SpreadSheet' function to access any other user's texting history. The
hack required nothing more than swapping a subscriber's cell number
into the code to view information like date, time, sendee and message
status -- actual contents of the SMS or MMS sent could not be
accessed.

WASHINGTON . The international telecommunications company Verizon has
been tasked with helping the government fix the federal health
exchange, USA TODAY has learned.
An informed source in the telecommunications industry said Verizon's
Enterprise Solutions division has been asked by the Department of
Health and Human Services to improve the performance of the
HealthCare.gov site, which is a key component of the Affordable Care
Act. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the
announcement had not been made official.

operator completes the sale of its Verizon Wireless subsidiary next
year.
In the third-largest transaction in corporate history, Vodafone is
selling its stake in America's biggest mobile network to its joint
venture partner, Verizon Communications, for $130bn (&pount;80.4bn), and has
promised to return 71% of the money to shareholders.

SAN RAMON -- AT&T said Tuesday it intends to sell its mammoth regional
office complex in San Ramon because the company's need for space in
the building has dwindled.
"We plan to sell the building at 2600 Camino Ramon and lease back the
space we'll need for continued occupancy," said Alexander Carey, AT&T
spokesman.
