Subject: AT&T looking to buy more spectrum for 5G
by Monica Alleven
AT&T isn't taking a stand on whether the commission should approve the
T-Mobile/Sprint merger, but it is letting the FCC know that it is
fully engaged in the 5G arms race and will be acquiring more spectrum
through secondary market transactions and future auctions.
AT&T said in no uncertain terms that the U.S. is already the world
leader in 5G - and lo and behold, AT&T is the leader among the
U.S. carriers, according to its comments to the FCC (PDF). "AT&T has
been busy laying the groundwork for its 5G deployment since 2016, and
it is poised to introduce mobile 5G service in twelve cities by the
end of the year," the operator said.

Subject: Brute Force Attacks Exposed T-Mobile, AT&T Account PINs and
More
By Mike Peterson
Two separate security vulnerabilities exposed the personal
identification numbers for millions of T-Mobile and AT&T accounts,
according to a new report.
The security flaws were discovered in Apple's online store, as well as
the website for phone insurance firm Asurion. The vulnerabilities
allowed hackers to gain the PINs, passcodes and partial social
security numbers for millions of mobile accounts.

Subject: At this Verizon store not owned by Verizon, the staff sold
a woman a phone she did not need
by Christian Hetrick
When Bonnie Parkhouse walked into what looked like a Verizon Wireless
store in July to buy a case for her new flip phone, she received
disturbing news: the device was about to become obsolete.
Parkhouse, a 68-year-old retired professor, said a salesperson at the
New Britain retailer told her the bare-bones phone wouldn't work once
Verizon phased out its 3G network in months. Parkhouse didn't want a
smartphone, but was talked into buying a Samsung Galaxy S6 for $668.
