Subject: FCC Announces Meeting of Hospital Robocall Protection Group
The group, required under the TRACED Act, is to issue best practices
this year.
"Robocalls can interfere with the critical life-saving work of
hospitals and health care facilities and their dedicated front-line
staff," FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a news release from the FCC .
Now that the group is established, it must issue best practices this
year regarding how service providers can combat unlawful robocalls
made to hospitals, how hospitals can better protect themselves from
such calls, and how federal and state governments can help combat
these calls, ACA International previously reported.

***** Moderator's Note *****
I heard a folk song a few years ago: Dar Williams wrote it. It's got a
line in it about an ice storm, and a woman listening to the radio ...
And this just in, we're asking everyone to turn off their power
They need it at the hospital.
When I heard that, I remembered a storm from my youth, in a suburb
near Boston, when everyone was supposed to turn off their power,
because they needed it at the hospital.
I'm old now, and too cynical for my own good, and I cast a jaudiced
eye on glib anouncements that hospitals deserve protections that I
will pay for - but on this occasion I'll take the advice to heart, and
ask that we all stop burning our daylight and wasting our energy
listening to the privileged few tell us that "we" must sacrifice so
that "they" don't need to do without.
We have to save our precious supply of common sense, allegiance, and
(above all) willingness to fight for the right.
They need it at the hospital.

Subject: Commerce Dept. Petitions FCC To Issue Rules Clarifying CDA
Section 230
by Jeffrey D. Neuburger
On July 27, 2020, the Commerce Department submitted a petition
requesting the FCC initiate a rulemaking to clarify the provisions of
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA). Unrelated, but
part of the same fervor in Washington to "rein in social media," the
leaders of the major technology companies appeared before the House
Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee at a hearing yesterday, July 29,
2020, to discuss the Committee's ongoing investigation of competition
in the digital marketplace, where some members inquired about content
moderation practices. Moreover, last month, a pair of Senators
introduced the PACT Act, a targeted (but still substantial) update to
the CDA (and other CDA reform bills are also being debated, including
a bill to carve out sexually exploitative material involving children
from the CDA`s reach).
