Subject: T-Mobile squeaks past Verizon
by Brian Barrett
FOR YEARS, T-MOBILE has been known mostly for its relative
affordability, and a CEO who's not afraid to wear leather. A new
report on the state of US mobile carriers, though, shows its recent
investments in infrastructure are finally paying off. Verizon and AT&T
officially have some real competition.
The report, from OpenSignal, drew on data from millions of smartphones
to gauge the speed of US carrier networks and how big an area they
cover. T-Mobile has long excelled when it comes to speed; at over
12Mbps, its 4G speeds are on par with or, as of December, ahead of
Verizon. (AT&T hovers just above 8Mbps, while Sprint's 6.38Mbps may
sometimes feel closer to 3G. Zzzzzzzzz.)

Subject: Missouri County Commission mad at Centurylink
by Andrew Sheeley
Tensions between (Dent County, MO) county officials and CenturyLink
are reaching a boiling point. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles
reported frustration both Thursday, and again Monday concerning
billing mistakes, which he says are shorting the county's 911 fund,
and a lack of communication the county has received concerning the
sheriff office's 911 system.
"CenturyLink is probably the most frustrating vendor we have to deal
with," Skiles said Monday. "The local people here are great, but there
is a problem at the higher levels of the business offices."

Subject: Cyberthieves Have a New Target: Children
It can take years before theft of a child's personal data - and the
financial damage-is discovered
To the list of things we wish we could shield children from, add identity
theft.
Cyberthieves target children because their identities offer a clean
slate with which to apply for bank accounts, credit cards or loans,
government benefits and tax breaks. Criminals will often combine a
child's Social Security number with a fake date of birth and address
to avoid suspicion, experts say.

Subject: Comcast IDs First DOCSIS 3.1 Markets
By Jeff Baumgartner, Multichannel News, 2/02/2016
On the heels of recent field trials, Comcast announced the first batch of
markets where it will launch residential and business-class gigabit broadband
services using DOCSIS 3.1 technology - Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Miami and
Nashville.
Comcast did not announce pricing for its new D3.1-powered offerings (those
details are expected to emerge during the next couple of months), but said it
plans to launch D3.1-powered services in Atlanta and Nashville in "early
2016," and follow with launches in Chicago, Detroit, and Miami in the second
half of 2016.
