Subject: CenturyLink files suit against PUC over funding mechanisms Message-ID: <20150131164738.GA27154@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Rural broadband could be affected by Marianne Goodland A deal to deregulate CenturyLink and get broadband services into unserved areas has hit a snag: the [Colorado] Public Utilities Commission. CenturyLink filed a lawsuit against the PUC earlier this month, challenging the way the agency decided to allocate funds tied to two of five telecommunications reform bills passed by the General Assembly in 2014. http://www.coloradostatesman.com/content/995340-centurylink-files-suit-against-puc-over-funding-mechanisms -or- http://goo.gl/MTCIt7 -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly) You've got that pure feel, such good responses But the picture has a moustache - Cream

Subject: Re: Tons of AT&T and Verizon customers may not have "broadband" on Thursday Message-ID: <20150131033640.2057.qmail@ary.lan> In article <mac0ci$lap$1@dont-email.me> you write: >New 25Mbps minimum would leave 19% of US homes without broadband access. A front page article in today's Financial Times points out that the new definition of broadband is bad news for the Comcast - Time-Warner merger. Now there are a whole lot fewer places where the cable companies have competition that qualifies as broadband, which means that the merger looks even more like consolidating a monopoly. It's not clear whether that was the FCC's intention, but it's definitely their effect. R's, John

Subject: The Final Verizon FiOS Map Is Bleak as Hell Message-ID: <20150131163940.GA27119@telecom.csail.mit.edu> After Billions in Subsidies, The Final Verizon FiOS Map Is Bleak as Hell by Ashley Feinberg As Verizon inches towards the end of its long-promised FiOS expansion, we can finally get a look at all the places these heavily trumpeted fiber cables have actually ended up. Behold the final(ish) Verizon FiOS Fiber map. It's bleak as hell. The map itself comes from Fiber For All (you can see the full interactive version here), since Verizon doesn't offer a FiOS coverage map of its own, for now-obvious reasons. Although in all fairness, the few places that do have access to the fiber service are generally in the country's more high-density areas. But according to Fiber For All, the number of people with access to FiOS still only hits about 12 percent of the total population. http://gizmodo.com/after-billions-in-subsidies-the-final-verizon-fios-map-1682854728 -or- http://goo.gl/yIIDdt -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly) There's a world, you know You got a way's to go And I'll soon believe - it's just as well This is my opening farewell - Jackson Browne
