Subject: AT&T Hungry to Expand Into Europe Message-ID: <kvr9os$p7$1@dont-email.me> AT&T Hungry to Expand Into Europe by Karl Bode 04:33PM Friday Aug 30 2013 As Verizon eyes expanding into the Canadian wireless market, AT&T has their eyes set on expanding into Europe. Bloomberg notes that AT&T has explored possibly acquiring portions of Vodafone, European carrier EE, as well as part of Spain's Telefonica SA. Rumors that Verizon would be buying out Vodafone's 45% ownership stake in Verizon Wireless re-emerged this week; AT&T's interested in buying some of what's left of Vodafone, but wireless only -- not any of the company's fixed line ambitions. AT&T could pay about 80 billion pounds ($124 billion) for what's left of Vodafone, according to Wall Street analysts. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324009304579042523492899800.html -or- http://goo.gl/BWE84L -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly)

Subject: Big surprise: Ex-FCC chief defends the cable industry Message-ID: <kvrag1$3uk$1@dont-email.me> By Michael Hiltzik August 30, 2013, 1:59 p.m. Former FCC Chairman Michael K. Powell, who is now the chief lobbyist for the cable industry, takes issue with my Aug. 25 column about how cable monopolies such as Time Warner and Comcast have made Internet access slower and more expensive than in many countries around the world. Powell, in a letter to The Times, grouses that I overlooked "the fact that America is among the world's leaders in broadband choice, availability and quality." -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly)

Subject: Vodafone's U.S. Dream Ends in Once in Decade Verizon Deal Message-ID: <kvr8g7$r51$1@dont-email.me> Vodafone Group Plc (VOD) is poised to exit the best investment it ever made, pocketing as much as $130 billion from the 45 percent it owns in U.S. mobile company Verizon Wireless and focusing its attention on Europe. Vodafone and Verizon Communications Inc. have been in talks on and off for years over the partnership that left payouts from one of Newbury, England-based Vodafone's most profitable assets at the whims of the Americans. Verizon jumped the most in four years in New York trading yesterday, and Vodafone surged as much as 9.6 percent to the highest price since 2002. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-08-29/vodafone-s-american-dream-ends-in-once-in-a-decade-verizon-deal.html -or- http://goo.gl/DV7tz4 -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly)

Subject: Lightsquared proposes reorganization Message-ID: <kvr7oh$nrv$1@dont-email.me> Philip Falcone's LightSquared Inc. proposed a reorganization that includes a potential sale of wireless spectrum instead of an auction led with a $2.2 billion bid from a unit of Charlie Ergen's Dish Network Corp. (DISH) LightSquared filed the plan outline today in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan and said it will continue to seek approval from the Federal Communications Commission to use its airwaves. The company said it also will weigh a sale of the assets and didn't identify any potential bidders. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-08-30/lightsquared-proposes-outline-for-reorganization.html -or- http://goo.gl/YpPBaH -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly)

Subject: Verizon-Vodafone Impact: 'Colossal' Message-ID: <kvr95u$u15$1@dont-email.me> Talks for Verizon Wireless Could Give Vodafone Cash to Spend in Europe, Create Openings for AT&T. By RYAN KNUTSON, THOMAS GRYTA and SAM SCHECHNER Verizon Communications Inc.'s push to take full control of its U.S. wireless business could spark a new round of mergers across the telecom industry. Verizon's talks with Vodafone Group PLC, which owns 45% of Verizon Wireless, could soon result in a deal worth as much as $130 billion, said people familiar with the matter. That would be the second-largest acquisition on record, bigger than Exxon's purchase of Mobil or the ill-fated merger of America Online and Time Warner Inc. in 2000. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324009304579042523492899800.html -or- http://goo.gl/wwjrud -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my address to write to me directly)
