It has WiFi access, but I don't know enough about it to set it up for WiFi phone calls, or even if the phone can do that. Hell, I don't even know how to find out the model number. Sherry Turkle is a singular voice in the discourse about technology. She's a skeptic who was once a believer, a clinical psychologist among the industry shills and the literary hand-wringers, an empiricist among the cherry-picking anecdotalists, a moderate among the extremists, a realist among the fantasists, a humanist but not a Luddite: a grown-up. She holds an endowed chair at M.I.T. and is on close collegial terms with the roboticists and affective-computing engineers who work there. Unlike Jaron Lanier, who bears the stodgy weight of being a Microsoft guy, or Evgeny Morozov, whose perspective is Belarussian, Turkle is a trusted and respected insider. Subject: It's Still Nice to Be a Cable Company Message-ID: <C7229436-C661-4EC8-A7DE-B939B13DA101@roscom.com> It's Still Nice to Be a Cable Company Remember how back in February, the Federal Communications Commission imposed new "open Internet" (aka net neutrality) rules on broadband providers? And how in April Comcast, facing opposition from the FCC and the Justice Department, dropped its plan to buy Time Warner Cable? It felt like a turning point, an end to the vision, pursued most aggressively by Comcast, to remake the Internet in the image of cable television. One business columnist even declared that "the cable era is over." And, yes, an era does seem to be waning. In August it only took a few stray words on a Walt Disney Co. earnings call to send investors scurrying from Disney and other big owners of cable TV channels such as Discovery Communications, Time Warner, Twenty-First Century Fox and Viacom. The cable channels' lucrative revenue mix of subscriber fees and advertising is showing the first signs of erosion as viewers cut the cord and get their TV through streaming services. The sudden realization of this occasioned a stock rout.
