LinkedIn settles class-action lawsuit (Bill Horne)

We must fight spam for the same reason we fight crime: not because we are naive enough to believe that we will ever stamp it out, but because we do not want the kind of world that results when no one stands against crime.  - Geoffrey Welsh

Subject: Please recommend a range-extender for Verizon cell phones Message-ID: <muonc1$2l4$2@dont-email.me> I'm living in the mountains of North Carolina now, and the cell service is sub-optimal. I've decided to install a range extender so that I can get reliable coverage under my tin roof. If you use one, please tell me what it cost, where they may be obtained at the lowest price, how well it performs, and the things you would like to have known before you bought it. Thank you. Subject: Yes, that legal notice from Facebook is real Message-ID: <muomgs$1pr$1@dont-email.me> If you're a Facebook user, there's a good chance you got an email over the last 48 hours with the subject: "Re: LEGAL NOTICE OF SETTLEMENT OF CLASS ACTION." It's not of the Nigerian riches variety. For one, it's only offering you up to $10. For another, it's legit. The email stems from a lawsuit we've been covering exhaustively here at the Not-So Private Parts. "Fraley vs. Facebook" stems from Facebook's decision in 2011 to put users in "Sponsored Story" ads based on things that they had "Liked." The ads didn't always reflect the context in which someone "Liked" something, as the dude who famously wound up promoting a 55-gallon drum of sexual lubricant last Valentine's Day can attest, and there was no way of opting out (beyond not Liking anything). http://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2013/01/26/yes-that-legal-notice-you-got-from-facebook-is-real/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly)

Subject: LinkedIn settles class-action lawsuit Message-ID: <muomnk$2l4$1@dont-email.me> If you just got a long email about LinkedIn and a class-action legal settlement, yes, it's real, and yes, you could be eligible to get a chunk of the $13 million that the professional social network is paying to settle the lawsuit. Here's the deal: In 2013, a class-action lawsuit accused LinkedIn of accessing users' email accounts without their permission and unwittingly using their names to send email invitations to people in their address books. http://www.businessinsider.com/linkedin-settles-class-action-lawsuit-2015-10 -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly)
