Subject: Trump officials weigh encryption crackdown
Senior Trump administration officials met on Wednesday to discuss
whether to seek legislation prohibiting tech companies from using
forms of encryption that law enforcement can't break - a provocative
step that would reopen a long-running feud between federal authorities
and Silicon Valley.
The encryption challenge, which the government calls "going dark," was
the focus of a National Security Council meeting Wednesday morning
that included the No. 2 officials from several key agencies, according
to three people familiar with the matter.

***** Moderator's Note *****
The ruling class (which we workers refer to as "El Patron") has a
problem with encryption. I have pointed this out before, but it bears
repeating: the job of the National Security Council, and the National
Security Agency, and every other spy shop in the world, is to make
sure that "El Patron" is never threatened by new ideas,
innovative thinking, or common sense.
For the most part, they are effective: the NSA makes sure that the
next Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in the next Silicon Valley garage
will arrive at the patent office and find out that their new,
innovative, and oh-ghod-why-didn't-we-think-of-that idea was just
patented by an anoymous corporation, and that they'll be paying a
tithe to "El Patron" for the rest of their professional lives.
Encryption, or more accurately, robust and properly secured end-to-end
encryption, scares the bejeezus out of the ru^h^hPatrons. They are
scared spitless at the thought that groups of creative, courageous,
intelligent, and/or (heaven forfend!) resourcefull men and women will
decide to fight back, join together, and then ...
... disappear.

Subject: Applications Due September 9 For FCC Auction Of 3,400 MHz
Of Spectrum
Here's the headline:
The Federal Communications Commission has released a draft notice
on proposed auction procedures for the December 9 auction of
3,400 MHz of spectrum in the 37, 39 and 47 GHz bands. If, as
expected, the draft notice is approved, applications to
participate will be due on September 9. The FCC will vote on the
procedures on July 10.

And, here's why I'm interested:
"The 37, 39 and 47 GHz bands?" I admit I was working on microwave
"back in the day," but that seems somehow out-of-this-world. If you
know what these bands are to be used for, please submit more info, and
thanks in advance.

In two long-awaited decisions handed down yesterday and last week,

Subject: CWA Starts Bargaining With AT&T Southeast
(This is from the CWA newsletter)
T&T Southeast
As bargaining opened on Monday with AT&T Southeast for about 22,000
CWA members, the CWA bargaining team emphasized the need for AT&T to
share its record-breaking profits with the people who make it all
possible - its employees.
"If you were to visit any work center or call center across [CWA]
District 3, you would discover that your employees, our members, are
not treated with the respect they have earned and deserve," said
Richard Honeycutt, Vice President of CWA District 3, in opening
remarks to the company.
Though the company claims that recent job cuts announced before
Father's Day including more than 900 in the Southeast are a result of
a lack of work to be done, AT&T has increasingly turned to contractors
to perform CWA members' work in call centers and in the field.
"We start this bargaining session demanding AT&T show our hard-working
members the respect and loyalty they deserve. This can be done through
better wages, benefits, improved work rules, and job security. Give
work to your employees - CWA members - not the employees of other
companies," Honeycutt said.
The current contract expires on August 3, 2019.

Subject: Verizon's 5G Promise Rings Hollow In Sacramento
Analysis of public-private partnership reveals lack of transparency,
accountability, and equity
The public-private partnership between the City of Sacramento and
Verizon Communications promised to make Sacramento one of the nation's
first "5G cities." Yet the deal has failed to deliver promised
benefits, and residents may wonder whether this partnership is a
corporate giveaway.
The agreement with Verizon lacked transparency in passage and
accountability in the provision of community benefits. In the past two
years, Verizon has seriously delayed or completely dropped key
benefits.
