Subject: Advocates urge FCC to Reject Prison Phone Co. Merger
Law360 (July 19, 2018) -- Legal reform and human rights advocates have
called on the Federal Communications Commission to refuse prominent
prison-phone operator Securus Technologies Inc.'s bid to buy a
competitor, arguing that the company has a shaky track record and will
have a monopoly over the industry.

Subject: Land line service restored to Castle Creek residents who
live in cell-free zone
By Madeleine Osberger
Crews installing a fiber optic line Tuesday afternoon knocked out land
line phone service to the majority of the Castle Creek Valley, though
service was believed to have fully been restored by Thursday
afternoon, said Pitkin County Engineer GF Fielding. The area is not
served by cell service, with satellite internet as that valley's only
other option,
Fielding said contractor Sturgeon Electric - which was responsible for
the severed lines while doing work for Pathfinder LLC, the locally
based internet service provider created to provide fiber-optic
broadband service to the Castle Creek Valley - made its priority
restoration of the land lines before continuing work on the fiber
optic lines.

Subject: Rep. Brian King looks to restore net neutrality standards
in Utah
By James Hoyt
State Rep. Brian S. King (D-Salt Lake) is crafting legislation that
would require internet service providers that do business with state
and local agencies to adhere to the net neutrality guidelines that
were in place before Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit
Pai dismantled them last year.
Proponents of net neutrality - which includes 80 percent of
respondents in one national poll from 2017 - say Pai's rules enable
large ISPs to choke out smaller competition and will allow them to
control how content is served up to internet users in the future. In
response, providers have said they "have committed to no blocking, no
throttling and no anticompetitive prioritization," according to an
emailed statement from the Utah Cable and Telecommunications
Association.
