We must fight spam for the same reason we fight crime: not because we are naive enough to believe that we will ever stamp it out, but because we do not want the kind of world that results when no one stands against crime.  - Geoffrey Welsh

Subject: Yahoo Passwords Stolen in Latest Data Breach Message-ID: <p06240859cc2547d81abf@[10.0.1.6]> Yahoo Passwords Stolen in Latest Data Breach By DREW FITZGERALD July 12, 2012 Yahoo Inc. said it is investigating a data breach that allowed a hacker group to download about 453,000 unencrypted user names and passwords in another black eye for the Internet company. The Sunnyvale, Calif., company said Thursday that the compromised user information belongs to Yahoo Voices, a self-publishing service once known as Associated Content. A hacking organization called D33Ds Co. posted the stolen data on its website and appended a note describing the download "as a wake-up call and not as a threat." The group said it aims to expose Yahoo's vulnerabilities. Yahoo said that less than 5% of the Voices accounts had still-valid passwords, though the file disclosed email addresses from hundreds of thousands of users. Some people registered for the Yahoo service using email addresses from other services such as AOL Inc. and Google Inc.'s Gmail, neither of which were hacked. But with users' Yahoo Voices passwords exposed online, those users who shared passwords across several websites could still see other accounts compromised. Yahoo said in an emailed statement that it is fixing the vulnerability that led to the data breach. The company also said it is changing affected users' passwords and notifying companies with accounts that might have been compromised. Constellation Research analyst Ray Wang said Yahoo apparently fell prey to an extremely common kind of database attack that most companies typically take steps to combat. ... http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304373804577522613740363638.html

Subject: Judge lets startup relay live TV to iPhones in NYC Message-ID: <4FFFAADE.9010609@annsgarden.com> By LARRY NEUMEISTER | Associated Press - Wed, Jul 11, 2012 NEW YORK (AP) - A startup company can continue to send live TV programming to iPhones and other mobile devices in the city despite objections from major broadcasters that say expansion can threaten the free broadcasting of events such as the Super Bowl, a judge ruled Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan said she understood how the service provided by the company, Aereo, may be unfair to broadcasters. But she said the law left her no choice but to reject a request by News Corp.'s Fox and other broadcasters to pull the plug on the company. Aereo lets customers capture over-the-air broadcasts for viewing on iPhones, iPads and computers for $12 a month. A copyright infringement lawsuit was filed by Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC and others, accusing Aereo of copying and retransmitting their programming over the Internet unlawfully. The landmark case was Fortnightly Corp. v. United Artists, 392 U.S. 390 (1968). Here's a link to a 1998 article I wrote about that case: http://tinyurl.com/ceb7j4u Neal McLain

Subject: Robert Bonomi is the acting moderator Message-ID: <20120713192529.GA26606@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Thanks for reading this. As you know, I'm going to be out-of-touch for a long while, working at a seasonal job in Montana in a place with no Internet access. Robert Bonomi has volunteered to be the acting moderator while I'm gone, and I hope you'll accord him the same courtesy and help you've offered to me. Please remember that Robert's moderation style might differ from mine, and I'd appreciate you working with him to resolve any issues. I'll see you in September! Bill -- Bill Horne Moderator
