Subject: AT&T Labs' Mazin Gilbert on AI, quantum computing, data
collaboration and 5G
By Larry Dignan
Dr. Mazin Gilbert, AT&T Labs' vice president of advanced technology,
is placing his research bets on software defined infrastructure, big
data, artificial intelligence and ways to scale and optimize the
telecom giant's network.
But first Gilbert needs some help from the open source community to
bring the data sharing that'll enable many of these advances.

Subject: Widow troubled by CenturyLink bill
A Metro area widow said she was only trying to be honest but that led
to a chain of events that's left her with an unexpectedly high
and confusing CenturyLink bill.
Married 63 years, Hugh McManus had all the bills in his name and when
he died his wife Leota called CenturyLink to let them know. McManus
said, "I said 'so you need to change it to my name but leave
it like it was.'"

AT&T Finally Introduces The Real-Time Text Service
By Manny Reyes
AT&T has officially unveiled the Real-time Text (RTT) communications
service for those who have difficulty in hearing or speaking in a bid
to replace the legacy teletype (TTY) method for persons with
disabilities. For those who are not familiar with TTY, it is an
accessibility solution that is intended to help those with hearing
limitations type their message in the phone keyboard in order to
communicate. The RTT, meanwhile, is a communication solution based on
text that aims to convey to the audibly challenged many services that
TTY apparently failed to deliver, including the limited selection of
device-generated characters and its relatively slow performance. In
contrast, RTT sends and receives each text character in near real
time, which means texts can flow as quickly as voice communication
without the need for conversations to take turns.

Subject: AT&T customers in Fletcher frustrated by days-long service
outage
by Kimberly King
FLETCHER, N.C. (WLOS) - Some AT&T customers in the Fletcher area said
they haven't had service for nine days.
Richard and Linda Goodall, who live in the River Stone subdivision in
Fletcher, said company officials have apologized for the outage but
have done nothing to explain why their TV and internet service is
down. Richard said he's made numerous calls to the communications
service giant and has even gone to the company's Twitter customer
service account, @attcares, where he's communicated with service reps
who also have been unable to provide him answers to the outage.
