Historical background:
1) This article from Bell Labs Record describes the Pentagon's then
new PBX, serving up 15,000 lines. Note the then new fluorescent
light fixtures:

2) This article from Bell Labs Record describes cordless (console)
based PBX's. Many of the principles and practices developed in
those years are carried through to today.

3) After WW II, the 555 was a popular single position manual PBX,
serving up to 13 trunks and 120 stations. Two could be placed
side-by-side to double capacity. A marketing brochure is shown
here:

Subject: Verizon will no longer activate 3G phones; network will
shut down at the end of 2019
By Alan Friedman
Do you remember your first 3G smartphone? For yours truly, it was the
BlackBerry Storm, which was released half-baked from Verizon on
November 21st, 2008. Let's say that after all these years, you want to
re-activate your old Storm or BlackBerry Storm 2 (the latter was a
decent phone) on the Verizon network. That will no longer be
possible. A statement released today by Big Red confirms that the
nation's largest carrier is no longer activating devices that do not
support 4G LTE connectivity.

Subject: Kavanaugh's Nomination Could Be A Win For Big Telecom
By Kelcee Griffis
Law360 (July 13, 2018) -- As a D.C. Circuit judge for the last 12
years, U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has a well-defined
record on telecom issues that has benefited large internet service
providers and cable companies when faced with complaints that they
have harmed competition and when they face zealous regulators.
